center console delete

I ran AX yesterday at Infineon and sucked but had lots of fun. I have a big bruise on my right leg from grinding into the center console. I am 6'4" and have to sit somewhat oddly to AX. The console has air con controls and audio casette holders both of which are of no use to me. Is this a common delete? Is what is left underneath post-delete visually attractive (the rest of my intereior is immaculate)? Any reason not to do this? Post-delete pics anyone?
Thanks,
Patrick

Bump!

No idea, but I want to do the same thing (removed AC already and tapes... ?!) So free *bump*. :)

My 74 came without a center console and I pick one up at a sawp meet to install. If you already removed the a/c you can remove the center console. Just a couple of screws.

I don't have a pic, but I think I remember a black ribbed rubber mat that separates the carpet continues under the console that at least gives it a finished look. I don't think you would find it offensive.

I am 6'2" and also tired of bashing into it. The AC was dead and had been removed so I pulled out the center console. The result was not that unsightly in my opinion.

I am 6'4" and there's no way I could drive with a center console in place. Mine is gone with no air conditioning deck either. Very open and airy. Looks great too. If you really want a pic, e-mail me. I'll go snap one and e-mail it to you. -Bob

Woot - that looks good. Was the carpet already under the console, or did you have to add some? Nice seats too, I have similar seats but in red (and a shade that doesn't match my car very well :/ )

The carpet and mat were already there. The biggest "issue" was deciding on what to do with the wires for the AC switches. I in-elegantly shoved them forward under a mat.

Gary,
Where did you mount the A/C switches?

Did you have to muck with the shifter at all, or just remove and replace the shiftboot?

My ac compressor and condensor have been removed by my wrench, but the fan at the very least is still live. I guess I'll just wire nut it for the moment until I can trace the wires and remove them.

John: The AC system was completely removed. The switches were left in the console and the wires left in place in the car and shoved forwards. You can just see them in the left of the pic.

Gustav: Nope. I did not have to even remove the shiftboot. The console held the base of the boot down so I tucked the base under the carpet instead. Worked out pretty well.

Thanks for the replies. I will post pix after the circumcision.

I removed mine and clipped the AC temp control wire back to the harness. For the fan control, I added extension to the wires and zip tied the harness under the dash. I moved the fan control switch to the blank, located just to the right of the steering column. There is not much clearance between the relocated fan switch and the cruise control lever, but they do not touch. Also, you cannot see the fan control switch when seated, but I know where it is. All in all, I am pleased with the results. Now I just have to put the center console back in, if I ever want to compete in PCA Stock Class :(

Where does one locate a set of those shwanky Recaro's? To digress a bit . . . they kick ass.

Not to hijack, but what's the preferred method of getting a console ('77 w/ factory AC) out of the way for a ball cup bushing change? 101 simply says, "remove console". Thanks.

drl911 12-23-2004 04:17 AM

Remove the center console and don't look back.
Also think of it as incremental weight reduction. It all adds up, right!

I've got the late Carrara console with AC controls and Rear Defog, Hazard Lights switches. I am keeping AC but would like to loose the console. Anyone done this yet, keeping everything functional?

Chris

drl911 12-23-2004 05:56 AM

I relocated the hazard switch to the main console just to the right of the steering column and relocated the rear window defroster to a "blank" spot between the fog light switch and lighter. The radio fader was non functional so it was just cut and thrown away. The AC was already removed so that was not a problem.

The hard part was that the wires from the hazard switch were not long enough to reach the new location and all 8 (yes 8) wires had to be lengthened. The access to the area next to the fog light switch is through the front hood so the defrost wires also had to be lengthened and re-routed. Somewhat of a PIA, but worth the effort. I can post a picture latter today.
