Eight 911's For Sale in Monterey
Took a drive to Monterey this last weekend, as I was downtown there is this Euro car dealership. In there lot they had eight 911's for sale, three 78SC coupes , two 79SC coupes one 84 Carrera and 2 78SC Targa's. Since I have an 81SC coupe I was curious on what they were asking for them. He said that silver one in front that needs some work was $15,500 the other four in nice shape they were asking $17,500 I said thank you and left. I said to my wife only in Monterey would they be that much. Am I right in assuming that is outrageous pricing for a 24 and 25 year old car

Not really, especially from a dealer. Depending upon year, condition, miles, etc... I'd say SC's should range from 13-18 at dealers and 9-16 from private owners with the occasional oddity above or below those numbers.

Then the pricing took a huge jump in the last two years. I paid $10,000 for mine in the same shape as those. Don't get me wrong I'm glad mine appreciated, I am just suprised.

When I bought my SC five years ago 11/99 I paid 11K W 60K miles. The guy I bought it from had it about 4 years and paid 16K in 3/96 W/50K miles. The original owner probably paid around 30K in 1980.
The guy I bought it from was into cars and thought 10K was about the bottom for this vintage 911 in nice shape and I tend to agree. As these cars start to fall by the wayside from lack of maintenance and care examples that are in top condition should start to command higher prices. But who knows, as they have alot to compete with both older and newer. If you judge them (SC's and Carreras) by the following they have on the chat boards they should hold up well. Just for kicks, What do you guy's think my SC is worth today ? It has Raceware headstuds and is maintained W/ 7's and 9's No fancy stereo and black interior, 83K miles.

Those are high prices. That's why I don't buy at a stealership. Private party, in the Bay Area and at the West Coast decent SCs still start at 8 to 10k and they are really nice for 15k.
A guy in the local club bought an early 3.2 carrera in decent shape, 140k miles for under 12k recently. The deals definitely are still out there. Of course the dealer has to make money, hence they charge more. Buying at a dealership will make the hunt easier and you may get a short warranty and financing, that's the only incentive to buy there. Also, often, when you start talking business, prices can drop quite a bit at used car dealers. I have driven past that dealership in Monterey and can only testify that they have a pile of aging euro cars with fantasy prices tagged on them. George |

Nice looking SC, Bob...I see you take your car to Klaus, too. I'm due for another visit to NARW soon!

I keep one eye open for some but I'm not to crazy about the amount of weight they add over the stock seats. I do like the lateral support they give. I had them in a Carrera I had. |
