Classic newbie questions, I've got an '84 with 7X15's front and 8X15's rear. The "comfort" setup I'm told. I want to upgrade to 16's for both performance and looks. What is the best option without pushing things, 8's and 9's?

What are my options in acquiring them? Are there any vendors who sell them or am I limited to hunting on Ebay??? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

That'a lot of Porsche for a newbie :)

I found a nice set off a Turbo, 7's and 9's and that's the sizes I would recommend.
I would consider new ones If I couldn't find a NICE set used.
Wheel enhancement sells them from time to time.

Yeah I guess that does come off a bit strange but this '84 is my fist 911 since '82 and my fist Porsche since I sold the 944 Turbo in '89.

Back then I was just a youngster and drove the heck out of 'em without giving anything much thought. I'm trying to be a bit wiser this time around.

There's another florida guy - 70 Fasty that sells fuchs - and refinishes them - do a search and send him a PM = Never met him - but seems like a decent guy

It's '70 Fasty, I think, and, yes, he's on the good list. (AFIC)

Since you're a self-described newbie, be warned that your wheels are quite desireable, especially the sevens. If you upgrade and decide to sell your wheels, do some research on their value before selling them off. Good luck and enjoy your car.

That's good advice Dave - I did not realize my 7's were that valuable - ended up selling my set to finance my brake project! And Zeke is right too.

Now just curios as to why the 7's are in demand and what are they going for per set?

They fit on the early cars - my set I sold for 650 - in about 15 minutes

If they are clean, the pair of sevens is probably worth 500 alone. I sold two pair to fellow Pelicans for 400 over the summer. They sell for more on ebay but it's nice to give the deals to the guys here, especially for the in-demand items. The sevens are scooped up quickly here by the guys.

The eights are more common and less sought after. They are not worth quite as much. For reference, I have an original set of eights on ebay right now:

Just don't get sticker shock for the 16x7/9s! As much as I'd like to have 9s, I've decided that my money is better spent elsewhere for the time being.

Thanks for all the info. I'm aware of the cost of the 9's but was unaware that my 7's were desirable. I'll try "70 Fasty" for starters I guess.

Another thing to be considered is why you really want larger diameter wheels. There is a gearing advantage in smaller diameter wheels that gives you a seat of the pants feeling of a faster car with 15's. You can get 15x9's if you look hard enough although they are very pricey too. Of course the tire options are limited in 15 inches but aside from more tire options and simple aesthetics, why would you want 16's?

A change in gearing doesn't necessarily come with a change in wheel diameter. The tires width and profile means a lot too. Depending on the tires you can keep the overall diameter when going from 15 inch to 16 inch wheels.


8 and 9 are great, but expensive.
