Smogging a P-Car in Bullhead, AZ
What's the procedure for getting a car registered / smogged in Bullhead, AZ? I have a address.
My 78SC with 3.6 will not pass pass the CA emissions test and I do not want to spend the time or money to get it certified by a smog referee. So, I either have to sell it, get a historical plate or get it registered in a more "favorable" state.

In AZ I believe you only need a smog in Maricopa and Pinal counties (Phoenix/Tucson metro) If they do test up there, they only measure HC and CO for the age of the car. The limits are HC in PPM 220 loaded and idle, CO in % 1.20 loaded and 1.20 idle.

Are you going to keep it in Bullhead? Are you going to establish residency in AZ? I'm seem to recall the CHP and local California constabulary monitoring out of state plates that "hang around too long". If you drive a regular route with something like a 911 with out of state plates might you get pulled over? Jim

Paul, I don't understand why a shop like Andial can't get it in spec and send someone with the car to get it signed off. You might be talking about a few hundred dollars, but going to AZ and obtaining registration and title seems like a few hundred dollars worth of trouble to me. Is the motor that tired? Didn't you just do the swap last year? |

Thanks. The motor is not tired. It's just the opposite. I just don't want to deal with the smog refs or anything else. There are no cats and the motor is not a US version. The car is driven only on every other weekend, so being seen all the time is not a problem. It also gives me the satisfaction of "beating" the system.

The nice thing about registering it in AZ is the fee is based on the original sales price with depreciation. My 1980 is $19.00 per year.

pbs911,
If you have a address in Bullhead City, you won't have to smog it. just go down to the mvd (arizona's version of the dmv) and register it. The price will be very reasonable compared to CA. As Jim Sims stated, you may get pulled over after an extended time driving with the arizona plates in Clifornia. flagstaff_911sc
