Maybe it's a little shot at BMW. They put a graphic like that on their Light Weights.

old time race graphic..it denotes national origin...I told Cris he should try the Phillipine flag colors...he responded that they are red, white, and blue. D-OH on my part...:o

Many drivers used their country of origin flag colors as a sign on their cars in the 50's-60's. This was very common on racing cars during that era. Just a thought.
