It Really Happened at the BP Station

As I'm filling up the 911, a young man (at least young to me...) comes up and asks if he can look at my car. Sure, I say with a bit of pride--help yourself. He walks around, gawks a bit at the front end, comments on the classic look of the headlights, and then asks if he can sit in it. Sure, I say. He sits, holds the wheel and smiles. This thing has more room than I imagined, he says.

I'm filled with pride, feeling good that I'm helping a member of the younger generation understand the Porsche mystic. "What are you driving these days?" I ask. He points to the pump behind me at the BRAND NEW 2005 Bronze 911 Carrera 4S. Holy *****! I say!

"Can I sit in your car" I ask. Sure, he responds. I sit, hold the wheel and offer to simply swap keys with him. He pauses, reflects and says---I ought to, since yours is probably paid for.

Case closed. I get in the old girl and leave the BP Station, hitting the redline at every gear, once again happy that I'm driving a classic, a paid for classic at that.

Awesome story. Yep, that's one of my favorite 911 colors. Almost bought one that color, but the car was in rough shape.

I wanted a 911 since I was about three years old. I was very foolish with money growing up. Never saved a dime. Got out of school, got married, and bought a house. Started different retirement funds and investments for the both of us. Told my wife I wanted a 911 and she told me I could get whatever year or model I wanted as long as it was paid for when purchased. NO LOANS.

Best advice she ever gave me. Well worth the wait.

Topsail......Beautiful coupe!

Hey we're in pretty much the same boat... Hopefully I'll be ready to "pull the trigger" this spring. I hear from a lot of guys who's significant others really put up barriers, I guess we must have the cream of the crop!

Topsailbeach, what amazes me is that this isn't just true of new Porsches, but even upper-end compacts! Cripes, I can get in a decent SC for less than a new Jetta! Then look at depreciation...

Greenspud will make us suffer for our high debt levels....

Maybe some will be able to latch onto the newer Porsches as the high interest rates shake them loose from the present owners....

Perhaps it was buyers' remorse - I could almost hear him thinking:
"Damn....these earlier 911s sure are pure machines......"
