915 Transmission Tools, Vancouver BC

Looking to borrow or rent at a cost any synchro hub removal tools for gears 1 - 5 on my '77, 915 Transmission. Or a shop that has the tools and will remove the syncro hubs for me. I am located in the Vancouver, BC area. I am replacing the entire 1st gear and following through with the syncros on all the other gears. Thanks.

I am in the prospect to do the same. If you find some tools, let me know. I think John Walker said, don't quote me it was late, to take a few rags lay them on a concrete floor and take the end of the shaft and smack it down on them. The inertia will drive the gears off. Don't take my word for it, read it for yourself:

Can't Shift Into First

Best of luck.

that's for disassembling the shafts, not the syncro teeth. i've done it with a hammer and sharp knife-edged chisel in a pinch. in fact, turbo 2nd gear needs to be done that way because nobody makes a puller for it. or you can bring them or send them here.

Check in at Bert's Automotive on Kingsway in Vancouver. There used to be a guy named George there (retired now) that was extremely knowledgeable in Porsche gearboxes. Maybe they have someone else there that knows their stuff. They may also still have the tools.

I appreciate all the response I received as well as the hyper link. This will definately come in useful.

If John Walkers Shop would like to quote me a price on removal of all the syncros and re-installation of all the gears I would appreciate it. I will drop the engine separate the transmission and do as much possible. Two Quotes.... if I supply the parts or your shop supplies. Thanks very much.

it only takes about 5-10 minutes each to swap the toothed ring. i don't want to qoute parts prices on this website, pelican being a parts seller.

There is another guy in North Van who runs a Porsche shop, 'Frank Allers Autosport'. I've only met him twice and for very brief moments. He is very knowledgeable, a likable, laid-back kind of guy and quite approachable. I believe he submits road test articles for 'Western Driver' and has a local reputation as quite a driver. A guy named George Allen used to be his partner but I've heard he works for 'Wetmore Motors', also in North Van. I hope this helps

Cheers

Brian

If you have a chisel and hammer you can do it yourself! It takes less than 10 minutes to separate the syncro hub from each gear. You just tap with the chisel between the gear and the syncro hub around the gear until it begins to slide off. When you see a gap, you can slide a screw driver on each side of the syncro hub and pry the hub off with the screw drivers. To put the new hub on you can just press it on with a vice, or have a local shop press them on. I heated mine up with a propane torch before I pressed them on to make it a little easier. If you don't have a chisel and hammer, it will cost less to buy them than it would to ship them somewhere and have the work done. Just my opinion of course.
