Staggered Tires

I have a 77S narrrow body car. It is set up with 21 F and 28 R T-bars, front and rear sways and Bilsteins. The car is lowered.

I run 205 / 50 /15 Kuhmos, 15 x 6 Fuchs, on all 4 corners for the track, this provides good stick and handling.

For the street, I have a set of 15 x 6 and 15 x 7 Fuchs. I need to get new street tires. I'm not really concerned about getting the maximum amount of rubber under the fenders, I just want the best street set up for comfort and handling.

I am considering running a staggered set up like 195/60 in front on the 6's and 205/55 in the rear on the 7's. Does this seem reasonable or worthwhile? I want to keep a tire profile that fits the body for the street. The 205/50 track set up looks very small on the car.

Or would I be better of with 205/55 or 205/60 at all 4's on the 6 and 7's?

I'm considering the Yokohama AVS 100's.

Thansk,
Ed

Can you get a 195/55 front and a 215/50 rear? Or a 205/55 front and a 225/50 rear? Are these even available? The 20 mm difference between f & r always felt better to me--quicker turn in.

The 205/50/15 is small for the street, IMO. 205/60s provide a nice sidewall height for the comfort you seek. If you want wider meat to match on the rear, the 215/55 wouold be a good target, but not commonly available. Khumo makes one.

I would use the TireRack specs sheets to find tires of similar diameters so your car looks balanced. The Dunlop 9000 is one that fits into this catagorie, IIRC.

Thanks Zeke.
I have to do some careful measuring, I think I could "just" fit 215/55's in the rear.

Anyone running 215/55's on 7-in fuchs in the rear of a narrow body?

Ed

I ran Dunlop Sport 9000's in 205/50/15 on 7" Fuch in the front, 215/50/15 on 7" Fuchs in the rear. I switched to 205/60/15 all around, but on 6's for the front and 7's in the rear and I really like that better. More tire filling the wheelwell, but still very responsive. I really liked the Dunlops, but I switched to Bridgestone Potenza RE950's because they were available in the size I needed.

I have had a couple of widths over the years on my 77.

I had 225/60s on the rear 6"ers w/ the wheel well @ about 24 1/4" and they fit, although the suspension was too tight and the body too low for our roads.

I currently have 215/60s on my 6x15 rears w/ 1/4" spacers w/ a rear height of 25".

I realize you don't want to go to 60 series tires. I am mentioning this to point out that 215s and even 225s can fit in there. Of course this can also be affected by wheel offset. I think what I have are the shallow Fuchs.

Thanks guys. I am not opposed to using 60's for the street.

Basically, I want to use 6 & 7 by 15's and am looking for the best street set up.

I really don't wana screw around with "making" big tires fit. Looking more for BTDT info of what will work.

I may try 205/60 in front and 215/60 in the rear.

I mentioned this before, but I am not sure if it was clear. I have had 205/60 f w/ 215/60 r and I have had 195/65f w/ 215/60r. The 205 fronts were good, but were a lot harder to get the car to turn in than the 195/65 were. W/ the 195 and 215s the handling seemed a lot livelier & more nimble. Just MHO. Coincidentally, this was the original factory setup for 6 and 7s on SCs.

Thanks Paul, that's what I'm looking for. I'm checking the Tirerack to what's available in those sizes.
