salvage title!!!??

So what is the deal with a salvage title. I am looking at a 912 that had a blown motor that was replaced. The motor was supposedly blown after the car was stolen and the replacement cost was too high for the insurance company so they would not replace it. What are the good and bad of having a car with a salvage title? The car looks really great and it is supposed to drive well. Any thoughts here?

Thanks again!

Salvage titled car are difficult to resale.

If you plan to keep it forever or turn the car into a race car or etc. then you can get a great deal on a salvage title car as long as it does not have frame damage.

You'll get as many opinions as there are different kinds of people. Personally, I think a salavge title with documented history of repair is FAR more deisreable than a car that has extensive body repairs due to rust, poor flare installation etc tht has a clean title. That being said, there are plenty of non-salvage title examples to be had...just depends on what you are looking for.

My car has a salvage title. I don't want to get into a debate about insurance scams, but my car had repair estimates for a small engine fire that essentially replaced everything that could be removed from the car including a top end job. Of course the insurance company balked and settled the claim. The car was repaired (it was a small oil fire that was extinguished on the side of the road with a small dry chem bottle....goes to show you how small the thing actually was). Everything was professionally done (PO's son worked as a mechanic at a dealer) for a fraction of what the settlement was. The PO bought the car back for almost nothing and drove it for another 4 years without incident until I bought it.

During the whole process he had taken a TON of pics of the fire, at the shop, during the fix and after. The history of the car was well documented before the fire, and received a big thumbs up from Dave Modderman on the west coast. I paid $13,000 for an immaculate car...which at the time was a steal compared to the junk I had been seeing at the same price range.

All in all, I'm REALLY happy with my car...salvage title or no. Most will say that it will seriously affect your cars value, but I happen to think that I have as much control over what I will be willing to take for the car or not....its not simply a case of some guy telling you a particular car is worth less than another ONLY because of a salvage title.

I have got a salvage title on my SC last Feb. It was a theft recovery from San Diego. I paid a fair price for it ($10.5K for 79K car). It has been a pleasure to drive, needed a couple items and presented no problems. When it comes time to sell, well I do not know what sort of hit I might take. It made 3K roadtrip a couple of weeks ago with nary a hiccup. Not planning to sell it anytime soon. I am not looking back either. My son thinks it is going to be his high school graduation gift. YMMV
