About 993 prices
I'm looking to sell my early 911 and get a 993. The price for these cars seems all over the map...from $25K to $50K depending on miles and the hopes/dreams of sellers
![]() Here's one at a dealer for $27K 95 993 $27K I'd expect to pay $30K for a nice 95 993 C2. Is that a reasonable expectation? Chuck

Just as a data point: Buddy of mine just picked up a '98 or '99 (can't remember) 996 coupe on eBay for $30k flat. Included a full FVD suspension kit, high miles but under 100k, and pretty much pristine. It's a sweet car and the price made it even sweeter. Check out all your options.

"---The price for these cars seems all over the map.---"
the first 993s are now ten years old ! what has taken place with a particular car over the last decade will have (should have) some influence on the current value. -mileage -maintenance -wear items with tires at $1k a set, pads and rotor job at $1k plus, 30k or 60k service at over $1k, worn shocks/struts at $2k, etc, etc. ; it's not hard to dump 3-5 thou on a new (used) purchase if the previous owner has let things slip. As these cars age, doing a PPI, a bodyshop PPI, and your homework becomes increasingly important. The car that you linked to seems like a really good deal IF it checks out at a PPI. $30 k should get you a pretty nice '95 coupe with somewhere around 60k miles. Of course, there is the odd tale of a super cheap purchase, or a really high sale. It all depends on how badly/quickly someone wants to sell their car. Or, how badly someone with $$ wants to buy a particular car. Drive as many cars as you can, even if the particular color combination doesn't really turn your crank- just to get feel for the differences between good and bad.. as they aren't always apparent just by looking. Like the older 911s, the actual mileage should NOT be the most important factor when accessing condition, but rather the 'care and feeding' by the previous owner(s). good luck, max

Agreed...I just didn't expect to see a 25K spread... Let's say you bought a mint $50K example. Seems like you'd need to get a special insurance policy just in case. Allstate certainly wouldn't care how much I paid for the car...rather they give you "book" value if that if it gets wrecked. Oh and the other problem is getting a loan for more than book value.... >>> with tires at $1k a set, pads and rotor job at $1k plus, 30k or 60k service at over $1k, worn shocks/struts at $2k, etc, etc. ; it's not hard to dump 3-5 thou on a new (used) purchase if the previous owner has let things slip. Yeah I learned that lesson with an inexpensive 944 turbo... I realize that these cars need care and feeding...I want to get a sense for what they are really trading for these days.

Sounds like a good buy. I'm not sure what it is but for some reason I want an air cooled 993. Can't explain it.

You're gonna see a spread for sure... Tired old creaky windshield 95s will be at the bottom, Twin turbos in the $65K+ - everything else in between, inclusing the rarer C2S and C4S which still command more money than a used 996.
So, back on topic, for a 95 check the following: - Steering rack for leaks - Rust at the corner of the windshield - valve guide wear (though as an odb1 car you will not suffer warning from the carbon buildup problem) - alignment issues - Harness recall The 95s are chippable too and you can almost get back to varioram performance levels. And yes, 30K is reasonnable. 27 for a tired one, up to 33 for a nice one... |

>>> valve guide wear
So this would make itself known through compression and leak down test?

Do any of you think that 993 prices will drop due to the 997 coming out? My wishful thinking says that those who don't like the 996 styling might now be more interested in a 997, thus reducing demand for 993s.

Maybe it's just me, but the more complicated cars become, the faster they appear to depreciate when they come off warranty. For 996s and 993s, it would seem to be true. Anyone checked out used BMW 745s? Ouch! Same thing with BMW 850CSI and Audi A8s. The systems are so anti-DYI and so complicated, no ownder people are scared. What do you do if BMW iDrive breaks? How about the dual-clutch system on a used Audi? There is too much risk for most people when considering a purchase of an out-of-warranty late model, European luxury/sports car. Is there anyone who can capitalize on this?? Lance |

I don't see 993 prices dropping because of the 997s. They are the last of the aircooled 911s. I think prices will always be up.

You need collector car insurance for a car like that. |

The 2 things that will hurt 993 prices the most are high milage and lack of maintainance, just like every other car out there.
