Toronto Porsche Mechanic Wanted
Hello fellow Toronto Pelicanites.
My Porsche trained mechanic of the last 20 yr is about to retire. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic/shop in or near the downtown Toronto area who can work on the older 911?

That's about what I thought. What if we expand the zone to include Etobicoke to Scarborough, and south of 401?

Hmmmm. Maybe you'd have better luck asking on Rennlist? I'm too new to Porsche ownership & have only used Gtek (O'Connor/St Clair) for my safety & smogging & some fixes. They were recommended by Bruce Farrow (PCA-UC Appraiser) who did my appraisal. Someone on Rennlist recommended Mario at Heimrath (Lawrence/Pharmacy). I thought Gtek's bill was a little astounding but, as I said, I'm new. I plan to self-wrench as much as possible. For fun & $ savings. I don't know if either knows older cars though . . . Ian Edit: I guess 77 ain't that old though . . . and Mario is supposedly deep into racing.

From what I know he was Can Am champion for a few years racing Porsches, also taught Paul Tracey the ropes although I not so sure thats anything to be proud of.He is on Old Kingston rd and has been for probably 35 years so he must be doing something right.

Not easy to get info but . . .
Kroll Auto Service 6098 Kingston Road Scarborough, ON M1C 1K6 (416) 282-5689 A garage lost in time - Horst Kroll operates a garage in West Hill, at the far east-end of Toronto, restoring old Porsches, Mercedes, and BMWs. They know where to get parts for Porsche 356s. Unfortunately, in the winter of 2004 business was slow. Hopefully, spring will bring out enough old cars to keep them in business. According to Fred Langan, too many people are buying new cars such as Acura's. The garage is next to Ted's Restaurant.

I recall a name vaguely....last name is Gohn or somesuch. Try asking Upper Canada Region (UCR) of PCA.....
I did a few tech sessions with Gohn and others in Scarborough a few years back.... a little bit of a treck every Wednesday from Buffalo after work. Usually had my head back on the pillow at home by 1:00AM. Wil

Try Refined Motorsports in Etobicoke (on North Queen Street). Speak to Henry. Very good mechanic, and reasonable rates too. I actually bought my '82SC from him. Any questions, PM me.

The PO of my car got a lot of work done here:
Weltmeister Autowerk 365 Dupont St, Toronto M5R 1W2 416 968-7433 The owner's first name is Uwe I use: Refined Motor Sports 150 North Queen St. , Etobicoke M9C 1A8 416 248-9777 because I like Henry Costa and it is closer to my home. For a more or less complete directory go to here: http://www.pcaucr.org/pcaucr/site/page.jsp?DETechCentres Best of luck

Thanks, everyone.
I'm familiar w/ Horst and Henry by reputation, and Randyrap also recommended Frank. Weltmeister are probably most convenient for me, but I have heard they are pricey. And, although I get parts sometimes from Heimrath, I have never used them for service. If I were retired w/ a pension like Bruce's I might use Gtek. All kidding aside, thanks again. I guess I have been spoiled by having a factory trained (1960s) guy w/ low overhead and a willingness to experiment w/ me on my cars, who was only 4 blocks from my home. (Sigh.)

Good initial impressions
After a less than good experience with Automega, I met with Henry from Refined Motorsports and he took the time to talk to me about my car up on the hoist and his estimate for the work is much more reasonable and well thought out than Leny's Automega
Also Refined Motorsports appears to be a Porsche only shop which in my books can only be good! |
