Red-tailed Duck...quack Quack QUACK!

Got her back from my paint guy today. I need to put on the rubber levelers underneath and put the Carrera insignia on (in the traditional '84 location), but she came out sweet!

Ed, it looks great. The duck flows very well with all the polished bits, much better than the Carrera tail with all the black.

Ed, where in Dallas did you get it painted at? Did they match your paint well?

efhughes3 11-19-2004 02:53 PM

Axl: Jack's Paint & Body in Carrollton-these guys are great. It's a custom color from the factory, and their paint supplier cringes when he has to match it, but I've had it in twice now after they painted it 2 years ago, and it looks good each time. They did blend in the quarter panels as insurance. The paint was almost twice what the tail cost.

Looks great Ed!

goat 11-19-2004 02:55 PM

That looks very nice.

Brother 11-19-2004 03:09 PM

very nice, Ed. Who did the paint? The SC might get a much deserved duck down in Texas as well.

CarreraS2 11-19-2004 03:24 PM

Looks really cool!

'84 Carrera?? Or is that a '74 Carrera?? I'm so confused! http://www.vintagebmx.com/ubb/confused.gif

Brother 11-19-2004 03:25 PM

great it took so long to post my question that you already answered it for someone else.

It doesn't look like you run air conditioning unless you just haven't gotten around to reinstalling it. Either way, have you upgraded it if you do have it, or do you get by without it?

azasadny 11-19-2004 06:48 PM

Ed,
Gorgeous car, but then again I'm partial to red targas!! The polished fuchs and the stainless targa bar look great together!!

Steeve 11-19-2004 11:15 PM

Man that looks awesome. I would vote to leave the Carrera insignia off. It's tough to screw with perfection.

JonT 11-20-2004 03:30 AM

Gorgeous Ed!

efhughes3 11-20-2004 04:16 AM

Brother: I do have A/C, but am in the process of a delete. I didn't put the rear condenser in, and I think I'm going to pull the front one and the condenser, leaving the lines in place.

Steeve: I'd thought about leaving the badge off, but I think the Carrera badge is "keeping it real".

Halm 11-20-2004 04:38 AM

Tail look s great, but with or without it, Cherry Rot rocks.

JeremyD 11-20-2004 05:26 AM

Ed - Post a old picture with the full polished fuchs and the big tail for comparison - I really like what you have done with your car!

I don't know what your driving habits are, but I guess you think you can get away with it in Texas.

I currently don't have a functional AC, and I'm thinking about adding a kuehl system when I move down there. Is the top off the best air conditioner out there or is this becoming a track car?

That looks great fit.

Brother: I've been thru 3 Texas summers with no A/C-who needs it?!

Here's a "before" shot:

Ed:

I really like the look of your 911 with the new ducktail. I think it is a big improvement over the Carrera tail and the stock lid.

1973911s:

Your car is absolutely devistating!

I am eventually going to have to add a duck to my car too. But, first I have to get it lowered, aligned, and corner balanced...

CarreraS2 11-20-2004 10:10 AM

If you are taking the compressor, etc. out, why are you going to leave the lines in place?

They come out easily, and it cleans things up. If you wanted to put them back in, they go back in easily.

Less than an hour in, less than an hour back on.

Why carry them around on the car when they are useless?

efhughes3 11-20-2004 10:32 AM

SoCal:
They just seemed like they'd be a pain to take out. 1 hour? We'll see, I hadn't given it a lot of thought.

Brother 11-20-2004 11:41 AM

I still have mine in there, but I think I'll have to try it out for a while when I down there in a few weeks to see if I can stand it without AC. After living in North Dakota for the last few years, my tolerances have swung the other direction, but I'll need to lose that for the new job anyhow.

I suppose not upgrading to the Kuehl system is really saving 3 grand that could go towards other things.

Ed, I'm guessing the P-car isn't your daily driver then?

efhughes3 11-20-2004 02:31 PM

Nope, not the daily driver. If it were, I'd have to address the A/C. Top off early weekend morning drives in the summer can't be beat.

I see. I'm from Wichita Falls so I now what your weather is like which is why I couldn't believe that you would survive without the AC. Mine is a daily driver.

rickdm 11-20-2004 04:32 PM

Ed, the car looks great. I am also in Dallas and have never heard of Jack's. Most everybody on the BMWCCA always refers folks to either GTI or Stuarts (?). Were these guys faster, cheaper, or just better?

Thanks,
rickdm

efhughes3 11-20-2004 05:26 PM

Rick: If I recall, Stuart's was one I got a quote from. Something was screwy, I can't remember-short on staff, too busy, something like that. I got Jack's recommended as a result of discussion about being popular with older cars and hot rods, but they do a lot of "garden-variety" work also. They were not cheap, maybe a couple of hundred bucks off of the other quotes.

I also had them put a whole new rear end on my Infiniti after being hit, another great job.

Schrup 11-20-2004 05:56 PM

Looks great Ed, I'd love to have on for my car as well. It's a nice wieght savings as well. Looks like you need to update your avatar now.
