72&73 guys help !!

I just got the engine to start in my project car for the first time.
Wow it started right up , now I have some questions. I have not driven it yet, just ran it in the drive way.

1. I think I put to much oil because it can out the breather hose.
(10 quarts)

2.The engine has a high idle about 1500 or so how do I fix it?

3. Because I put to much oil will the oil tank leak up at the top, till the oil level is correct or is this wishfull thinking?

4. The engine is smoking a bit, not much I figure the is normal for a engine that sat for 4 years

The engine is a 2.4 MFI from a 73 , the car is a 72

I'd get a turkey baster or something to suck out some oil. That might be part of your smoking problem. To set the idle first set the ignition timing. If you have a vacuum line to the distributor (you should), leave it hooked up to set the idle timing. Set it with the engine hot to the spec. (should be 5 degrees After TDC.). There should be a mark on the pulley there. Once you have the timing set then you can adjust the idle. Make sure the butterflies are closed to the adjustable stops on the throttle bodies. Assuming the butterflies are set correctly you can adjust the air screws on each cylinder to set the idle speed. You really should use a syncronzer to do it right. There is also an idle mixture adjuster on the MFI pump but I wouldn't touch that until the rest is correct.

On my car I found that by setting the timing correctly the idle came down to about 900 RPM.

It all depends upon how much you remove. My system can probably hold 12-13 quarts as it has a front bumper mounted cooler...
