I have recently purchased a car from California(I'm in Canada), am fairly new to the porsche cars. Cannot get the turbo to work
properly. There is no boost but have tried the obvious such as plugs, wires, vacuum leaks etc. Any suggestions where I go next? There are no rpms over 4000...

stuck turbo? wastegate open, or it's valve burned? intake bypass piston stuck in bypass mode, or it's spring broken? slide back the rubber sleeve on the left side of the turbo enough to reach in and turn the impellor. it should turn freely, no binding or drag. the wastegate exhaust pipe should not have any exhaust coming out of it. feel with your hand. are you saying it won't rev past 4K? frozen distributor advance maybe, plugged fuel filter? rule out these things.

Checked the wastegate, spring not broken. Valve is in good shape, not seized. The turbo is free, but no exhaust coming out of turbo wastegate.

This car has been sent to Andial racing in California and has two electronic 6 pack coils made by electromotive. Does not have a distributor. Has an andial reostat that controls either fuel pressure or
turbo boost? Have not checked the fuel filter as of yet, but don't suspect that to be the problem. This car was also sent to a Porsche dealership in California before I purchased it and had work done to it, maybe not hooked up properly? EGR valve has been disconnected and a few vacuum lines for emission have also been disconnected Would also like to know if there is any way to measure the air pressure in air cooler?

Mark,
When you say that there is no exhaust coming out the wastegate dump pipe, how are you testing this? I just want to make sure that you are aware of the fact that no exhaust will exit the pipe until the wastegate valve opens. This won't happen without the engine being reved up enough to start building some boost. When you say that it isn't building boost, are you just relying on the boost gauge to determine if boost is building, or do you actually also not feel it (change in your pants is not flying into the backseat when accelerating rapidly)? The boost gauges are well known for being faulty. Does the car respond well otherwise? I apologize for the simplicit questions, but I don't know if this is the first turbo that you have owned and therefore might be misdiagnosing the problem. Good luck, David 1986 911 Turbo |

I can assume that when you say there are no rpms over 4000 that maybe the tach is messed up, which is where the stock boost gauge is and it may be disconnected. But your kind of vague with your description so you may want to broaden your explanation a little.
