Wiper Clunk
I think my wipers are making a clunk that they did not used to make. The clunk occurs as the wipers move through and past the park location (still on the driver's side). Perhaps there is some play in the regulator, or something is starting to come unfastened. I just wonder if anyone thinks they know what this clunk is. Also, I wonder if the wiper regulator mechanism has bushings that can be replaced. I'm dreaming of a $15 set of replacement bushings. Dreaming.....

I got that clunk a while ago and lived w/ it for a few weeks. Then one day, I found a hex head bolt on the driver's side floor. Summoning up all my vast years of education and knowledge, I determined that the screw probably came from something behind the dashboard. Feeling up inside there, I turned on the wipers and noticed that the motor assembly moved w/ the action of the wipers, which produced the accompanying clunk. Between feeling around and checking the exploded view on this site, I found where the screw, which had worked its way out of the mounting bracket for the motor, should be. Replacing the screw stopped the movement, the clunk, and solved the mystery of the rogue hex head bolt.
With your X-ray Vision, you should be able to see the movement and missing or loose screw, unless you have the aftermarket Kryptonite dash. |
Superman,
This exact thing happend to my wipers during my drive home in the POURING down rain. I pulled over and popped the speedometer out of the dash and discovered that the three 10 millimeter bolts that hold the wiper motor in the bracket had worked themselves loose and the motor itself was clunking. Tightened them up, and problem fixed. Phil |
I'll third that. Pretty easy fix. Of course I found that out after driving for a year without wipers. Thank god for RainX!

Guys
Thanks I have been wondering what the clunk was on my 74 for 9 years. I thought i would get around to replacing the assembly one day. With your wisdom it looks like I can fix it quickly and cheaply Michael 74 911 71 911E |
Yeah, you've got a screw or two loose. I did too, but now I'm better. Seriously, ditto the above stories.

Well, thanks. I mean, I know I went a little overboard on the OT Forum in recent months and for some of those remarks I should perhaps be tarred and feathered. But...forbearance being the better part of friendship, all you guys have to say is that I may have a couple of screws loose. I appreciate that.

I never read the OT forum, just making a silly joke. The bolts in question do fall out though.
Is that winding road I use to take home from CJC to Tumwater (actually Lacey) in the sixties, still there? |
