Hello World! New member, first post.
 

Hello Pelicans!.....long time reader, first time poster here. I have been a Porsche owner since '91. Had a 924 to start, then traded up to a 911SC (had it for 9 yrs), and just recently traded the SC for a 1970 911T Coupe - LOVE IT!!

Never did much work myself on the SC (thanks to a very capable local mechanic in Elkhart, IN), but since trading for the T last spring, I've already replaced the fuel pump and muffler myself and I'm preparing to MAYBE replace the carpets myself while my seats are being re-upholstered. Presently, the 911 is under the knife at the body shop for some rust repair (front suspension pan).

Anyway, it looks like a wonderful "Pcar" (as you all would say) community here at Pelican BBS. I've already read some heart-warming threads of Pelicans helping one another through some seemingly VERY intimidating repairs (ie: rcecale's engine drop/tranny repair). Some of these threads read like a Michael Creighton suspense novel!!!!

I was wondering why you back-traded, too. I have an '89 cab as a daily driver, but often think about what it would be like to drive an older coupe or targa...guess I'd need a backup car if I traded to an older one.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the welcomes :) A few of you had some questions....

<b>Eric</b> - not sure what the current color is. PO had a "brother-in-law" paint job done a few years back, covering the original non-metallic dark brown with a similar, but metallic dark brown. I asked about the paint code/color name, but he did not know. I just refer to it as "metallic chocolate" LOL!!

<b>Mike and Charlie</b> - You both asked about why the back-trade. Well...and this will probably draw some heat... the truth is the SC just wasn't doing it for me anymore for some reason. I had owned it for 9 years, put about 35K miles on it, autocrossed it a bit, and it was a very reliable and fun car. Sure, it was great to roll up to a stoplight with the confidence that I could dust just about anything that pulled up next to me....I enjoyed that feeling for 9 years along with all the other excitement of a modern-day performance sports car. It was just time for a change....and I've always been taken with the early 911's with their less muscular lines, beautifully spartan interiors, and all that gorgeous chrome trim!!! Plus, to me, the early 911's have a more "raw" feel to them....just Air, Fuel, and Fire baby! In short, their simplicity just feels right to me. They drive differently, too - - still quick and nimble, but more of a mellow ride I think - more suited for touring than performance it seems. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Plus, I feel more confident that I can do some work on the T myself, which is proving to be VERY fulfilling to me. It really enhances the Porsche ownership experience. The SC felt a bit more daunting for me to wrench on, so I generally let me mechanic take care of everything.

I'd love to hear commentary from other SC-and-later 911 owners who have since obtained an early 911.

Matt, congrats on your early car purchase! From the pic I'd say you found a beauty. To determine the color, open the driver's door and look for the plate on the body of the car, on the forward door pillar where the door hinges are. It should have a code which can be used to decipher the paint color. Regarding your back trade, I started with a '95 993, bought the '73 911E, and thwn sold the 993. I loved the 993 for the years that I had it, but the 73E was just so much more of what I expected a 911 to be...loud, primative, nimble, and just plain gorgeous! Reading your reasons was like deja vu.

Matt, you and that stunner are more than welcome. If you are going for long-hoods now you better be careful or you'll be after a 356 or Speedster. But in the meantime, enjoy your stay.

Welcome Matt, such a lovely car you have there!

Having an early and late car you really get the best of both worlds. Early cars are about the wail at 7000, nimbleness and tossability (I think that's a word), and the classic, simple lines at their finest. But you also realize just how modern a longhood was for it's day.

To me, later cars are about customizing them to your taste (as long as your taste is good :) having some real power on hand and getting on the track for DE's without worrying about off-track excursions, that much. Sure they are tubs, but the solid feel makes up for it. My 84 is pretty much indestructible at 237K miles with the case never split.
