Okay my 2 cents. I bought an '84 (off Ebay no less) a couple of months back for just south of $15k some records but good PPI's (2 shops) has 96K. Had to jump on it to fill my garage (long story)

Next week I'm picking up a '96 993 for the wife, local private seller, $25.5K with 67K checks out fine but only some records.

Both purchases were based on relatively quick decisions, I didn't search the globe but both checked out okay and despite some minor cosmetic details look fine. The key thing for you is be sure you know what you want because for $22k your in a no-mans land between models based on condition and mileage and can go in any of several directions.

Good Luck!

I have an 86 Coupe and can vouch on how good the cars are. Bulletproof is not over used in describing these cars. I like the 915, set up right it's a wash versus the G50, more effort but more feel.

As for the price mine has 124K miles and is in like new condition. I thinks it's worth over $20K but would take a long time to get. Considering the low mileage I would say the one you're looking at is not over priced, provided it's a mint, all original car.

A bit odd there is no paperwork going back on it. If it has more than 57K then you'd be over paying. Why does the current owner want to sell it after just 10 mos.?

Some up close shots of the interior, engine compartment and paint would be helpful in assessing the car.

Let us know how the leakdown comes out. Mine was 1% - 2% which made me more comfortable with the engine condition.

actually the G50 was the car with the clutch recall/update - G50's are for girly boys!!! - just kidding:D :D

tycharle964 11-27-2004 04:46 PM

i wouldn't pay more than $19k, you are in 964 territory in that price range

where are you taking it for the PPI?

I help Krynock out and you can bring it over there if you would like...
he is in the yellow pages, shop is near the Diamond

if you have valve guide wear or broken headstuds watch out and the car suddenly becomes worth closer to $11k

West coast vs east coast prices...

The west coast guys will always say a car like this is too high on price but, the reality is there are many more cars there to choose from so the prices there will naturally be lower.

You really don't find near as many unmolested low mileage cars on the east coast.

It is not to say that you won't find one comparable for a cheaper price but you may be looking for a good while.

If the PPI checks out and you feel like this is the car you offer them less and go from there.

If you feel like it is too much then it is.

I always hear that west coast cars are cheaper because of greater supply, but what about the fact that west coast cars (CA to be specific) of a given age (year and mileage) are likely in much better shape because of the warmer weather. I shudder to think what cranking an engine over repeatedly on sub-freezing mornings will be doing to the longevity of an engine... If you had a choice between two nearly identical looking 1986 coupes with 50K miles -- one from Buffalo, NY and the other from CA, which would you prefer? If memory serves, Kelly Blue Book says the CA car would be worth a couple of grand more.

Rear Ended

I found an 86 today that has 57k miles and completely original. The car is in excellent shape and looks like it came off of the showroom floor. I could not find anything wrong with it. Drives great, looks great! It has front and rear spoilers, sunroof, the usual stuff. No noticeable leaks. What is the FMV of a car like this?

I don't know much about 3.2's but what are some of the problems to look for?

The body and all checks out perfectly so no probs there.

Thanks

Brian, I think you're in the cat-birds seat here. You are going to get a good check from the insurance here, hopefully it will mostly cover the expense of the new car. IF it checks out PPI-wise, I'd also do a carfax and see if you can do a dealer record search with the VIN (can Porsche dealers do that? I know you can access the maintenance records of my BMW bikes at any dealer through the VIN).
I agree that a paint and detail job can dramatically improve a cars first impression. I'm looking for a 968 and one of the best "looking" cars on my short list turned out to be a twice wrecked, twice auctioned "beauty". IMHO, any car that was well cared for has records to prove it. Then again, the dweeb who details cars for the dealership could have tossed them all in the dumpster.
And don't forget: wear a neck brace when you tell the agent you've "found the car he can replace your's with"!:D

911Brian 11-27-2004 05:53 PM

The carfax is clean. Matches up perfectly with the miles. There was an insurance claim report run on the car and nothing came up. The car never had any claims against it. There are some regular maintenance records but nothing that says anything major has been done. I went over and had the owner start it up for me while I stood at the rear. It was around 45 degrees outside. No smoke whatsoever, engine idled perfectly, revved perfectly. Sounded just fine.

I am taking it to Robert over at Lufteknic on Monday for a PPI. I don't forsee anything major, but I will leave that up to the mech.

david914 11-28-2004 05:20 AM

Brian, the bottom line is do you like the car? If the PPI is clean and if you feel it's a good purchase, do it! Again, I paid what I considered to be a premium for my car, BUT I have no regrets. I got a beautiful car in great shape and I'm happy. Let us know how your PPI turns out!

My 86 Cab is amazing....beautiful and bulletproof. Daily driver that I put over 800 miles per week on. No leaks, clean inside and out... great car.

1986 was the best year of the Carrera due to: updated interior, vents, lowered drivers and passenger seats, still has Black Porsche rear reflector, last year of the 915 (which is easy to work on if need be), thicker torsion bars, what else?

Buy the 86 coupe and you cant go wrong. Offer them 20K.

spooldup 11-28-2004 11:05 AM

If you check my post a while back about the 915,I have had many of both and would own either trans/clutch set-ups.I currently own 3 915 cars and a G car.My 86 carrera does shift smoother than my SC or my early 911 so it is true that a 915 can work well.

This argument would hold up with a high mileage daily driver.

But with a 50k mileage on a car almost 20 years old it isn't very likely the car saw too many cold winter starts.

Most of the guys with these cars put them in the garage for the winter.

spooldup 11-28-2004 11:22 AM

Living in northeast I see very few porsches on the road from november-march.Im a road rep and drive about 35-40 thousand miles per year.

tycharle964 11-29-2004 09:14 AM

let us know how the PPI went and what you are going to do if you don't mind

how was lufteknic service btw?

hkspwrsche 11-29-2004 10:34 AM

as a point of ref. there is an 86 carrera with 99,000 (twice the 50 thousand miles on the one Brian is looking at) in todays paper for $19700.00 ....Thats in Richmond Times classifieds...

JeremyD 11-29-2004 11:11 AM

As another point of reference - there is a 1987 Coupe - NH

1987 Coupe - 62,000 miles for $16700

http://images.autotrader.com/images/..._A.562x421.jpg

Link to Autotrader Ad

And yes, I would drive to save $5,000

tycharle964 11-29-2004 11:55 AM

i drove that white one listed for $19k and change yesterday

needs some brake work, alignment and a few small things....other than that very clean....would imagine new synchros soon as it shifts like a john deer from the 60's

think it is overpriced....should be more in the $16,000 range

I couldn't believe the 1999 996 with 30k miles on it going for $32k in the paper....amazing loss on those cars

The PPI went great. 1-2% leakdown across the board and everything else checked out great! It looks like I will have a new 911 by the end of the week.

Sorry SCWDP :( I had to do it. Am I still allowed to wear my t-shirt ;)

The service at lufteknic is great. Robert is an outstanding guy. I have been talking with him alot about this whole situation. He has my biz.

caliber60 11-29-2004 12:45 PM

"imho 1986 is the best year of the carrera. price should reflect condition."

Sounds like he is talking about '87-'89 in excellent condition. Pre-'87 can not get about $15K.
