2.7, sell complete or part out
I'm picking up a 3.6 that Chris Bennit, a fellow Pelicanite, just completely rebuilt to put in my '77. I will now have a 2.7 with 128K on her and was wandering if I should try to sell the engine outright or part it out. The engine has never been opened up but has had all the updates done to it. What do you think is the best way to go?

Just one opinion, but I would suspect that if there's nothing blatantly wrong with it, it might be worth more as a running engine to someone looking for a cheap, but useable engine than trying to part it out.

I agree with Mike. Let's face it, not too many looking for a CIS 2.7 mag engine for performance. But someone without the energy or finances for a swap could surely use this for many more miles to keep his 911 on the road. I'd try running first at your desired price and then part it out if there is little interest. Could still make a nice upgrade for a 914 without the need for so much upgrading.

How did it get all the upgrades w/o opening it up? When I hear a 2.7 has "all the upgrades", I'm led to believe the studs have been replaced?

LakeCleElum,
I should clarify myself. It has received the new fan, carrerra oil cooler, hydraulic tensioners, SSI's. In the latter part of '77, which is what my car is, all the head studs were steel, the valve guides were changed so they wouldn't wear out at 50k miles, improved oil pump and newer oil bypass oil pistons. The 7R case, even though it is magnesim, is not a bad case so long as the temperatures are controlled. It certainly isn't the SC motor but it isn't the early 2.7 either. Has the head studs been replaced with devilar or raceware? No it has not, if the engine temps are dealt with this is not an issue. Tom |
Thax for the clairfication Tom. The motor sounds in pretty fair shape. How much would you ask for it? Bob S.

I don't know yet. I'm in the process of getting things together to do the change over and I'm trying to get a feal as to what it's worth. It may not be until later this winter before I make a decision on how I'm going to deal with it.
