Leaking Fuel Line

Yesterday morning when I turned the heat on in my 86 911, I started to smell gasoline. This morning the same thing happened and when I opened up the engine compartment to inspect, I noticed infrequent drips, which must be coming from a pinhole sized hole in the Fuel Line (main line). Given the age of the car I wasn't surprised by this. However, when I checked the web for pricing, I get various numbers ranging from US$350-US$520 for the piece. Understandably, high pressure tubing is a bit more expensive and brass couplings aren't cheap either, but this seemed a bit much.

Does anyone have suggestions on aftermarket suppliers or similar experiences. Obviously this isn't something I want to toy with as it is a cruial part, but if there are any less expensive alternatives anyone out there is aware of, ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Where is this line located? Can you remove that section from the car easily? Is it a rubber line or one of the nylon ones?

You can have a hydraulic shop rebuild your rubber ones and reuse your ends (they usually do not go bad). For Nylon lines, there is a thread by Jim Sims on how to replace nylon lines if that is what went bad.

I have done both. Several years (rubber line) or months (nylon line) and no leaks.

I recently had to replace the pressure line that goes from the fuel pump to the rear of the car. I bought it from our host and it was less than $100. Is the line that you have leaking attached to that one, or is it the return line?

The one I replaced had the banjo fitting on one end and was part metal and part rubber. Why would another one be that much more expensive?
