CV Joint Question 72 T- No roll Pin??
I pulled the engine on my 72 911 T last week.
I simply unbolted the 4 hex bolts using a large breaker bar. All of the bolts came out without a problem. I then placed a screw driver on the metal flange and taped lightly with a rubber mallet. They came off the transmission without a problem. There is a thing carboard like gasket where I seperated the CV joint from the transmission I have been doing a search on more CV info and have read about a roll pin that aligns the joint. I don't see a roll pin anywhere. Am I missing something? Was it the way I took it all apart? Thanks for the help |
I havent unhooked the CVs from my '72 yet, but my '73 came apart exactly as you describe

I recently did this on my 71T. One side had roll pins, the other didn't. I assumed the pins had been lost on one side (wouldn't surprise me - so many things are missing on this car), but maybe not all came with them?
It worked fine without them., I don't think I'm going to buy a new joint because of this. |
The 10mm diameter by 20 mm long roll pins (actually Spirol pins) are original equipment (999.095.019.00) in the the 1972 CV joints; 8 per car (2 per joint) are required. The are available from Pelican (K-095-019-00) for $2.10 each. Jim

And you _should_ put them in. They will carry a fair amount of the torque.

Randy, I have the 2 10mm Pins: do they need to be replaced?
Or can I just re-use the existing pins when I reatach the CV joints to the transmission. These pins stayed on the CV joint, not the transmisson.
Can I also re-use the CV bolts? They came off using a big breaker bar after soaking in PB blaster. I'm not an expert mechanic but I took one look at those bolts and figured it would make sense to get the right tool- I went out and bought a breaker bar. One thing I have learned as a diy mechanic- GET THE RIGHT TOOL or prepare to replace a lot of stuff... Thanks, Ian |
I thought you were completely missing some of the pins (?)
I expect the existing pins will be fine. Inspect the bolt heads & threads after you clean them. If they look fine re-use them, unless Jim comes back on and says not to. Don't re-use the "spikey" washers. Get all new ones. Try to keep the grease off the threads when you reinstall. Torque. Then check the torque again in a couple of weeks. Search on Jim Sims and CV and you will find a lot of information on this. Pelican has these parts. |
Hey Ian wanna buy some hex bolts?
I ended up with some extras, you can have them for the same price as Pelican, I'll pay the shipping. Quantity 16 Porsche P/N 900 067 128 01 In unopened Porsche OEM plastic. Manufacturer is Kamax, property class 12.9 PM me if interested. |
The "roll" pins may be reused and they tend to stay in one side or the other; it doesn't matter which side they stay in. The screws may be reused if not corroded and if the wrenching features are in good condition. Replace the serrated Belleville washers (Schnorr washers) and reuse the "C-shaped" bearing washers. Cheers, Jim
