I have recently sent my transmission to my mechanic to overhaul. The mechanic have checked the 1st gear and found out that the end play or side play is 1mm and he was saying that engaging the gear is not enough and is not sure that how much should be the tolerance for the end play or side play. Please advice!!! Hope You can help!! (Problem before gearbox stripped down. 1st gear could not be engaged properly) Thanks!!!!!!!!

probably, the teeth on the shift sleeve and the teeth that the shift sleeve mates with on !st gear, are worn down so much that they can't hang onto each other. very common. i wouldn't worry about side play. end play in either shaft is not good. end play is controlled by the ball bearings in the intermediate plate, and the retainer plate that is supposed to hold them tight against the intermediate plate.
