Winshield washer
Hi,
What should be the windshield wiper speed for a 1977 (or similar year) 911? Whenever I turn my wipers on, it takes the wipers about 3 seconds to go from one end of the windshield to the other. Is this too slow? Also, is there more than one speed for the wipers, because on my car, there is only one speed, and it looks as if the windshield wiper motor is working hard to move the wipers. Does this year 911 have a vaccum-acting type motor? If so, I suspect there may be a leak in a hose. From my description, is the wiper/motor acting strange, or is it just me? Oh yeah, how do you get washer fluid to come out of the squirters? I just added fluid into the tank. I am assuming that you pull the wiper handle toward you, put when I do, nothing happens. So, how do you get the fluid to squirt up on the windshield? Thanks, Matt

There should be three speeds. Unless a 77 is different from 78 and up. On high, it takes about 1/2 second for mine to do a full sweep. The washer pump is in the front trunk where the jack is stored. Make sure the tubing is connected and not leaking, and make sure the pump acctually works. YOu should hear the pump when you pull up on the wiper stalk. Mine didn't work either and I found that the wiring was simply disconnected. My pump is getting pretty weak in its old age too.

Wipers are electric and your mortor may need some maintenance or at least a lube on the wiper mechanism. You get to it from the trunk.
The knob near the speedo is for intermittant wipers if you didn't know. Does this work ?? Jut filling the washer tank doesn't really do anything. You need to check the washer Pump (near the spare) and hoses, and also make sure the little squirters on the cowl aren't pluged. Usually with wax and smutz. Pulling the wiper handle towards you should squirt and operate the wipers for about 3 cycles. Mine work fine for a '77 but they don't get very much use out here.

Is the washer pump running when you pull back on the w washer stock? The motor is in the front trunk in front of the battery area. If no, then your pump might be dead. Check wiring & fuse first. If yes, then it is likely the T & L check valves in the line just below your wipers (inside trunk). Disconnect some lines & see how far up it pumps. Clean & aim washers nozzles with a pin. Or it could be the pickup tube in the washer tank. Ian

T & L -- they are shaped like those letters, and are acomon failure point.
ALso try blowing thru various disconnected lines to see if they are clear -- with that and the advice above, you can check before & after any point where you diconnect a line. Don't forget to check fuses, voltage at motor, etc. Good luck |

Thank you for all the replies! Below I have posted a link to my website to where I recorded what the windshield wipers look like when in motion, and me trying all the wiper levels. As you can see, the wipers are at the same speed throughout the video. Sorry for the poor video quality.

I am now in the process of taking the blower configuration off to get to the washer motor, although is seems very hard to do so, and I am stuck at this stage. Has anyone done this process before? I found out the motor is behind that blower, but I can't seem to get it off. Will it be easier to get the dashboard off instead
? Matt

What are you looking for? The windshield washer motor is down front near the battery. The wiper motors are back where you're going.

Thanks for the replies.
I am looking now at the wiper motor/arms. I got the blower housing off okay, although I just found out my battery is dead when trying to start the car . I have let it set on the battery charger, and in a couple of hours i'll reply and let you know my progress.Matt

I had to replace my wiper motor, it was a PITA, but while I was there and had everything apart, I lubed the blower and all the cables going to it. I also had to replace the wiper linkage, mine had broken it where the slave arm attached to the pivot. Yours does have three speeds, and it should squirt when you pull the handle towards you, plus it should make the wipers work when you pull it even if the wipers or off. Basically, pull squirt, wipe, then off again, by themself.

I just got the wiper motor out. It was extremely difficult getting a 5/16th wrench in through the wires to get the motor dettached from the body. The motor was a lot heavier than I thought, maybe 10 pounds. What I found out was that there was a lot of grease blocking the movement of the parts. I also found that a blue wire was disconnected from the motor apparatus. I will probably replace the instrument lights also before I put the motor back in. 3.2 CAB, I know what you went though!

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the wires that connect to the wiper motor? I want to find out if any wires are bad, and if any of them are, I want to see what operation they are for.
Thanks, Matt

Thanks, imcarthur.
I will print out that diagram and study it over the weekend. Unfortunatley, I cannot work on the car without my dad's help, and the soonest I can get to it is on Saturday. I'll post back over the weekend and show my progress. Matt

Okay, my dad and I have taken apart the wiper motor and the arms that the motor is connected to. It turns out that the arms needed to be heavily lubricated, and the motor had a couple of wire shorts in it, and smelled of burnt rubber. We tested the motor, and it is no good because of the shorts, so today we are going to Parts Heaven to get a new motor.
Thanks for all the help. I'll probably update later today, Matt

I'm back. We got a new motor at parts heaven a few days ago, and finally installed it over the weekend. We also got the washers to work. It turns out that the washer motor was plugged in wrong, and also a hose leading to the passenger side washer was cracked. We got a new hose from Ace Hardware, and spliced it into part of the old hose to make it work out. We re-assembled the washer mechanism, and tonight we got as far as re-installing the blower. We also found that some wires were cut and taped off. The car was repainted, so I am thinking that the painter might have done this when painting the luggage area. When installing the blower, we found that the blower was not connected correctly, and one of the main wires was taped off
. A bunch of cassete player/radio wires were taped off too. I guess I am going to have to start a topic on "blower wiring" next .Thanks for all the help here, Matt

Congrats on getting everything working. It can get pretty hairy under there as there is a lot of stuff cramed into a small area. It sounds like you and your father are getting some good bonding time with the car.
