David914: In the second pic from the top, it looks like the tiny shaft that holds the needle is missing/broken?
|
Thanks David - I'll give it a go and bring plenty of patience.
That must be a good friend - you're doing well in the P-car karma ratio, though ;-) Gunter - that second pic from the top is not my speedometer, but one posted earlier in the thread by another reponder who had already removed his needle, and then the face - a step I'm hoping to avoid. Craig |
Craig,
What would be the tell tale signs for a speedo with a messed up gear? What were yours doing, that caused you to open it? Mine sometimes reads 0, but if I go over a bump, or knock on the glass it starts working again. Might I have the same problem as you? Marius |
Marius,
I had only owned the car about a month, and after filling my gas tank I pushed the reset button (car NOT moving) and it set the trip odometer to 000.0 - after driving a bit, I noticed it was still on that number. I started watching my "regular" odometer and noticed it had also stopped moving. My guess is that the PO had not been in the practice of resetting the trip meter, and it was an accident waiting to happen. The brownish gear you see in my pictures is very brittle and the teeth could not take the extra forces from the reset knob and sheered off at the worm gear. I think you're probably talking about your (electronic) speedometer needle reading zero - my speedometer has not been affected by all of this and is working normally. Craig |
North Hollywood Speedo, or any speedo repair shop, will tell you that it makes no difference or damage if you reset trip-odometer standing still or rolling. It's one of those myth/rumors that start somewhere and don't stop. Cheers.

I just called North Hollywood Speedometer and they now charge $130 to repair plus $50 for gauge removal if you take your car there. This is as of 11/22/05.

I managed to break the needle shaft when removing it, but was able to repair it with a section of that red tubing that you use w/ a spray can of brake cleaner and some crazy glue. I simply reset it to zero and calibration seems fine. Its been ok for 10k miles or so.

Do not pull the needle. You would need to twist CCW. It worked for me.

Just thought I'd mention that I finally took my 911SC to North Hollywood and they fixed the speedo odometer in 30-minutes, including removal, repair, calibration and reinstallation. It's quick if only the odometer isn't working as mine was.

Did mine the other night in about an hour..saved my money for beer.
