I was wondering what the typical oil pressure was for a 2.7 liter?
I have a 74' 911, it has a oil cooler, and runs good, but I am thinking about a rebuild. The oil pressure is fine when your running down the highway, but really low at idle. Is this normal?

The typical oil pressure rule of thumb is 10-14psi (1 bar) per 1000 rpms. Many engines show near 0 oil pressure at idle though which is ok as long as you've got good oil pressure when the engine is reved. Also make sure your oil light does not light up at idle.
There is a new oil cam adapter that bumps the idle oil pressure up by about 10 psi. I'm not sure of the part number but do a search and you'll find it.

And those pressures are when the engine is hot. It'll be much higher when the engine and oil is cold, probably double that or more.

yeah, when its cold it is much, much higher. Thank you for the advice. I will definately look into the oil cam adapter. The reason why I am inquiring about this is because I am thinking about rebuilding the top-end, and I can't decide if I should just rebuild the entire motor.

my old 2.7 ran very oddly. The pressure would be at about 10 at idle and wouldnt exceed 40 on max rpm. Never knew why. Neither did my mechanic. He thought the springs in the motor that control pressure were installed incorrectly but before we figured it out, one of the pistons broke.
Not really helpful but is a story for me to tell ![]() |

The factory spec is 4 bar (about 59lbs) at 5000rpm with the engine at operating temp.

Yeah, mine runs between 180 and about 210. Where it's suppose to i guess. I have like lots anf lots of pressure at 180, like about 60 or a little more at 3 or 4,000 rpm, its just a little low at idle. but the low oil pressure light doesn't come on, so i think i'm ok.
