California Black plates

I found a set of Cali black plates. Is there a way of finding out what kind of car these came on? They were with a 60 VW Ragtop Beetle I just bought.

The California DMV probably has a record to tell which vehicle they were originally assigned to unless they are reprints of the California black plates. Check out this website for more info www.dmv.ca.gov.

I think the black plates started in '64, at which time all earlier cars had to trade their yellow plates for new black plates. It's probably a good bet that the '60 was issued its black plates in '64.

The black plates have 1963 embossed in the year sticker location.
As far as I know they were first issued in 1963.
I know someone who has an huge collection of the black and yellow plates, and he says there is no way to assign them to a vehicle once the dmw drops them from the computer(7 years?).
There was a push on to change the rules and let you run the plates like a vanity plate but our ex-governor Davis axed it.
