Question suede seats anyone?

Has anyone seen/heard of/had seats reupholstered with suede instead of regular leather or cloth?

My Porsche mechanic's shop also does trim work, and they claim to have re-done several 911 seats using suede and that the owners' have loved it. Can anyone weigh in on this notion? I'm preparing to have the stock seats on my 70 911T rebuilt (new foampacks, new seating surface) and I kind of like the idea of the seude (sounds comfy, huh?) but I have reservations regarding:

1. Heat - would suede be better/worse/comparable to the Hell-that-is-Vinyl that I currently tolerate (especially on roasty-toasty summer days).

2. Cleaning - so if these suede seats get dirty, I wonder how tough it would be to clean them effectively?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

It will wear very quickly. Stains will be tough to remove.

You might consider Alcantara (polyurethane based synthetic) or Ecsaine (suede look fabric). Both are used on OEM and aftermarket sport seats. I have Alcantara in the Audi and Ecsaine in the STI and the Ecsaine is great stuff--very durable, grippy and breathes.

IT looks nice and it's grippy but, when it wears it leaves a slick spot!

I had tan colored Alcantara in one of my Audi's years ago. Seats held up very well with over 100K on them when I sold it.

What's the cost to have the seats redone. I've got some stiching that needs to be redone and figured I'd get the foam replaced at the same time. A local shop quoted me $90 to fix the seats without replacing the leather which seems very reasonable.

Tom,

Geez, that sounds cheap! My shop told me to budget about $750 for rebuilding both seats. Of course, that would include R&Ring the seats from the car.....I am now thinking of doing that part myself and just bringing the seats in to his shop seperate from the car.

Thanks guys for your input!

Matt
