My Carrera Arrives!

Hello All,

We moved from Boston to San Diego this past September. I drove the wifes Saturn out to the west coast (3 1/2 days) first, the "winter car" 1997 Lincoln Town Car with all worldy possesions and wife, the second time (5 days) thinking that I would sell the 911 to my hamfisted brother inlaw to offset moving expenese. Well I snapped out of my New England frugality coma and pulled the trigger on a Intercity Lines full boat transport $$$$.

Here she is. I think I did the right thing.

Love California, even though it's a little frosty lately.

Thanks Brian,

Intercity was fantastic. I had used them twice before and was never disapointed. Expensive but no worries.
They call 24 hours before pickup and delivery. Very nice people besides, real car nuts.

After they left me they were on the way to the Midway aircraft carrier to pick up a load of new Boxsters that were on display during a Porsche promotion.

By the way, it 's a 1988 with original paint 117K miles.

Lemme see if I got this right....you used to live in BOSTON, and think SAN DIEGO is "frosty"? Man, a couple of months out west have really softened you up!!!

Just playin' with ya. Welcome to the left coast. You'll love it here!

No kidding! Seems since we moved here in September weather pattern has taken a New England twist. Lots of rain in October and record cool recently. Feels good!
Very happy to be here and looking forward to making lots of new friends!

As a former Bostonian who has not regretted the move, congratulations. California adds another dimension to Porsche ownership.

I'll say! I now have a garage and don't need a "winter car" anymore.
Once the paperwork was done with Intercity Lines and goodbyes were said, I warmed the oil and went on to explore the roads locally. Found a nice little two lane through the local mountains (Scripps Parkway headed to Ramona?) and proceeded to run it up to redline in every gear spare fifth! Yikes!
I roll back to the parking lot a work and hear a funny "crunch " noise from the right rear. Investigation finds a broken rear sway bar mount! Man, glad I didn't lift in fouth gear on that down hill sweeper!
Black Forest will be tending to that next week.

Welcome to San Diego.

The weather has been a bit cool here lately, but I relish the change.

There are many fun roads, you have found but one, it sounds like you took Scripps Poway Parkway until it hit 67 and headed North to Ramona. Another hour and you would see snow!

Black Forest has been my local wrench for my last 3 Porsches. Not the cheapest, but good people and quality work.

Finally, hopefully you brought a little of that Red Sox luck our way and the Padres will benefit.

Welcome to the land of fruits and nuts

you may not need a winter car here in Ca. but there are a lot of places your not going to want to drive your 911, and bumper to bumper traffic out on the freeways is one of them, having an extra car here in Ca. is just good insurance.

Max,
Glad you came out of your coma and didn't sell. That is one nice car...and silver to boot. I'd never sell it if it's as nice as it looks.
And take it for a spin in the San Berdoo or San Gabe mtns. Just don't fall of the cliffs. They are steep.
Welcome to the beach.

Imagine yourself in CA wondering about your Porsche being abused by your brother in law. You made the right move.

In CA, one time( late '70s) I was talking to my brother in law and one of his actor friends. The topic was dishwashers, how expensive they were and whether the actor should spring for one. Interestingly enough, the actor had arrived in a late model 911 wearing a Rolex. That's called setting priorities.

The sway bar mount failure happens to all of these cars eventually I think, It's due to the design of the original mount that allows just enough flex to result in metal fatigue/work hardening and eventual breakage. The replacements are designed differently and should go forever. You might want to do both.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone. I am sure I'll get a chance to meet some of you down the road.

Wayne, hamfisted translates to: Lacking dexterity/skill; clumsy. 2. Lacking social grace or tact. ... not really an acurate description of my Bro in law. He's a terrific guy and takes care of his family, but....he's a little hard on mechanical stuff. He's still looking for an '87~'88 in the NE area.

The only wrong move I see in this process is that you drove the saturn and shipped the Porsche. Good that you kept it though.

The original plan was to drive the 911 out and then fly back to pack up the Lincoln. I was on the Mass Pike (I90) heading west when I heard a disconcerting rumble from the right rear. It would disappear when turning slightly right. I called my wrench and he suspected it may be a rear wheel bearing.
So, turn and head home, load the Saturn and the rest is history.
I am amazed at how much attention the car is getting from strangers. Great conversation piece. People here seem a little more friendly. Maybe it's the weather?

You will never regret the decision to keep the Porsche. I grew up in SoCal and moved back east for a job, after 10 years I finally came to my senses and moved back to California, so welcome to CA. I used Intercity to ship a car and they were fantastic. I heard too many horror stories about some of the other shipper and the extra money was worth the piece on mind. The Intercity drivers had some great stories of the cool cars they shipped. They had also transported 3 new Carrera GT’s at once, and they had the pictures to prove it.
