72 911 T- Engine Compartment Color/Finish Question

I'm painting the engine compartment on my 72 911 T. I have learned that Black is the stock finish.

Was the stock Black finish, matte or shiny?

Does anyone know a brand/product that looks original and can be brushed on?

thanks,
Ian

My theory is that the factory used paint to cover the color of the original color that was sprayed, thus one can see "flecks" of original color through the paint...my theory also is that this was brushed on with a brush akin to one you'd use for house painting the trim. Your biggest problem may be with matching the color and reflective qualities, which I'd dub "semi gloss" . If I can post it, pic to follow...as done by the factory. Since you're in Portland, seem hung up on this, drive a couple of hours south, camera equipped...take all the pics you like...

(edit) Can't seem to post the pic tonight. Sorry...:(

pwd, thanks. I live in Bend now...

I will most likely just paint a semi-gloss black. While I'm on the subject....

Should I powder coat sheet metal, pulley, etc semi gloss as well?

thanks for your help.

Don't powdercoat if you are going for concours. It will never look exactly "right."

Pcoat semi-gloss to get close and have a durable easy to clean finish.

You might also try the engine comp. question on the Early 911S board. They are more into that sort of thing.

There are definitely places that look like brush marks on my '73.5 - but it seems like some of that is in the undercoat itself. I sprayed my engine comp. body color so it wouldn't be such a dark hole in there, but I have no interest in concours.

Randy, with a '73 you were "proper" with a body color engine surround. '72 was the last year for black engine surrounds and bottoms...;)

It's a new dawn...trying again on the engine pic.

Thx Paul - some PO must have sprayed it.
