Turbo gearbox

Went shopping at lunch time and saw a Red 930 84.

The salesman advised me it has a g50 box in it can any one tell me what year they started using the G50 in the turbos.

I know that the N/A 911's wasn't till 88??

Thanks in advance

Michael

Michael,

G50/50 didn't hit the 930 until 1989. Everything before that was stock with a 4 speed. It is a fairly popular, though expensive, conversion though.

Ed,

this has got me totally confused.

was there a g50 before the g50/50?

I slid under the car and it did not look like a botch job but hey i will check it out.

I will try and post the chassis number so it may give us an idea.

Thanks

Michael

G50/50 is the trans that came in the turbo in 89. Non turbo 911s had a G50 in 87 (in the US).

thanks for teh clarification guys.

I was on the phone to porsche who have advised me that it was actually a german delivered vehicle.

It was not delivered with a 5 speed.

I am now doing the check on the engine number to see if it is the correct one.

I would normally have walked away by this stage but the car is so immaculate and from the checking i did does not look like it has ever had a respray. it only has one stone chip on it so teh g/box issue is a bit of a quandry.

Thanks

Michael

Michael,

Don't be too afraid of the car because it has a G50 -- that's one hell of an upgrade if it was done well. I'd consider doing it to my car but it's too expensive....as long as the conversion is clean, you'll love it!

I looked at doing a G50 upgrade and found it was going to probably cost me over $8K. It sure would be nice to have it already done and let the PO take the depreciation cost.

I understand teh G50 upgrade is a good thing but this car has only 35000kms which is approximately 18000miles from new and it is a 83 model.

I would be concerned that some dodgey issues may abound.

Did you verify it actually has a 5 speed?

Sometimes salesmen have no idea what they are talking about.
