I had duck for thanksgiving
One of my project completed over the long weekend was I got the ducktail primed and painted. Turned out okay, still need to polish the clear after it has had time to cure a few more days, and I've got to cut down a grill to fit.

Looks great John!
I'm a big fan of the duck on the later model cars and have the same project to do over the Xmas break.

What type of tail? Fiber? What brand? I love it! Any installation problems worth mentioning? I saw some Fiber tails up close at the last show I went to and they ranged from OK to bad.

I'd rate this tail as just okay, not great. Gap is a little big between the fenders, and I need to scope out a smaller deck grill, the black plastic one is too big. Don't know who the manufacturer is, picked it up used. Its fiberglass and I had to reinforce a few cracks, no biggie so far.

John, I had the same issue with an SC grill that I was going to fit. I rang the guy who supplied the grill to me and he said that all grills are the same size. Having said this, he agreed to take my grill back and measure it against those from an earlier car and a 3.2 Carrera. I should find out today or tomorrow what his findings were.
The only other possibility is that the grill's are supposed to be raised (on mounts of some sort) that would make them sit flush with the surface of the tail rather than recessed, sitting down into the tail. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Looks great John. Now you need some RSR bumpers to match!
All the early, mid SC and Carrera grills are the same dimensions. They had various materials, finishes, and designs through the years. The grills typically install so the top edge of the grill is flush with the decklid. Sometimes, spacers are needed to accomplish this.

Thanks Jaimie, seems my suspicions are correct.

Most of the ones I've seen used an SC plastic grill and have had the the corners modified with a Dremel. I believe that the original opening was modeled after the opening you will find on the early long hood cars. The early grill appears to be a little smaller.

There is probably a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch that needs to come off a plastic grill, so spacers aren't going to help. I've got an early split grill on the wall, but it was a hair to big also, the acorn nuts on the top and bottom hit the decklid. I think there is a size in between I have to find.

In retrospect, the aperture on my duck tail is tapered. Mine is only about 1/4 of an inch to big, so if I were to place some small spacers (as mentioned by jpnovak) between the grill and the mounting surface for the grill on the tail, I'm sure that would solve the issue.
John are you sure this is not the case for your as well?

Sheldon, got the ruler out tonight to double check, old decklid opening, 9", new ducktail opening 8.25". Spacers wouldn't help. If I can't locate a smaller grill, I can take the sander to a plastic one.

Spacers aren't part of the assembly on these, they are really rubber pads-maybe 1/8" or so thick. I just puit on a new TRG (built by Getty Design) duck, it fit really well, and accepted the stock grill without any issues.

Well my 3.2 Carrera grill was delivered today and guess what, it is smaller than the SC unit and fits the ducktail perfectly! The 3.2 grill is also made of metal, rather than plastic which is a nice touch. It'll look fantatsic when its fitted.
