The proverbial: what's my car worth? thread
I've come to the conclusion that I should just sell my 911 and buy something else. I want something with more power and with the money that I would dump into mine making it fast, I could just buy a turbo. No sense in building something they made at the factory...so...
Its modded as is: 1982 911 with a 1986 3.2 liter swap. 915 Transmission. The engine was built buy an engine mechanic who worked for Carolina Speedworks. It now has roughly 15,000 miles on it and the body has roughly 80,000 miles on it. Keep in mind, he did not do the work for me, he built the car for himself but then decided to sell. You'll see in the photo that every nut, bolt, and hose is brand new. The interior is very clean, it was redone with all new carpet and door panels. rear seats, knee bar and center console have been removed. The body is pretty much flawless with the exception of a mark on the front bumper which has been there since I bought the car (its one of those things that you only notice when washing the car) Here are some photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So how much should I ask for it? |

You do realize you also have turbo flares on it? Are they steel or fiberglass. You also have the Carrera front valance and from the looks of the headlight washers it also appears to be a Carrera front bumper. Unfortunately while all the mods are desireable it limits the number of potential buyers. Some people may scream that I am underestimating the value, but I would be surprised if you could get more than $13-$15K for the car.

I hear you on that totally. If anyone wants to trade me their turbo for my 84, I am GAME RIGHT NOW.
That includes the 75 -77 3.0 non-intercooled Turbo. You got one and you want my 84, which looks pretty decent in person, please msg me. I also have all of the stuff I took off/out, except for the AC. Includes the bumpers, sound deadening, the back seat backs, spare tire. I have the old decklid with a Carrera tail on it as well. 205k miles. (Sorry to highjack thread with this). no, it's hijack...dictionary.com says either. Anyway, offer stands!

I think you can get at least 18-20K, but I'd ask for more.
It's a beautiful car in mint condition.

That's a nice rural road you where you got the pics. How much more power do you need to make that curve?

Now in 993 land ...
|
Very nice, but likely too custom for most buyers. Even the people that like it (include me) will know that it isn't worth as much as an original car. Hence, it's worth less than a wide body Carrea. What's a widebody Carerra go for? 20k? If it were track prepped with a good record, it may actually get close to 20k if you find a track driver.
Is the heat backdated or deleted? With the 964 and even the 993 coming down in price, it will be tough to sell. Just think about it, if you can get a decent 930 for 30k, why buy a custom normally aspirated widebody? One more thing it has against it is the fact that you won't pass smog in CA, unless you go back to stock exhaust and have it refereed. At least it has a newer engine that is close to stock, so theoretically it is possible. Practically that means that the huge CA market will not bee too interested. There's a 74 911S in the classifieds...widebody with 3.2L. He's down to $12k. 84-89 Carreras fetch what? $16-25k. Most guys would buy the Carrera. You need a special buyer. My guess: $13.5k if you eBay it and get a real buyer.
I don't intend to offend. regards, jurgen |

IMO, the best market for a car like that is a buyer who can appreciate the style and innate Porsche-ness without worrying too much about originality or mechanical details. Put an ad in the nearest big-city newspaper.

I agree, high teens. There's someone out there that has a $12K 911SC that wants to do a 3.6 motor swap. They see the costs of the conversion (parts/labor). Selling their SC and buying a car like this with the work done would be easier and less expensive. All of the sudden $18K is a steal. But you need to find that guy.

Thanks everyone for your input. I agree, its not a car for everyone (what porsche is?) - but its certainly not appealing to a collector, but I'm sure there are more people out there like myself who are attracted to such a car because of the mods that have been done to it.
I'll probably put it on ebay - I think its probably the best place to advertise to the audience that this car would appeal to.... |

Fahrv, the 74 911S in the classifieds has issues. He recently posted more info. Since your car appears to be in much better condition, i rescind my earlier comment. Add $3622.37 to my earlier estimate, bringing the final estimate to $17122.37. Subtract $814 for time of year. Add $1007 if the temp is above 65 degrees F. My final answer...

IMO a 3.2 in an SC is a nice upgrade, but not exactly an earth-shattering improvement. I would think an engine swap like that in an SC would probably be a wash in terms of value up or down. A couple of plus points for performance, a couple minused for non-originality. The car looks very nice. I would guess that eBay would bring ~$15k, but definitely keep us posted!
As a comparison, a very nice looking '77 w/ 3.6 & alot of other very cool stuff failed to get any bids at 20k. |
