How does one evaluate a chain tensioner out of the box new, and used ones?

What does one look for after pulling used chain tensioners out of the chain housing for inspection, and for possible re-use? Is there a visual inspection?

And can new ones be tested, visually or otherwise?

Thanks

Do you have the updated, pressure fed Carrera type tensioners?

tensioner test

I'd like to know same; I have my original type tensioners out and would like to stick with mech. types. I can't figure out however, what is the correct tension?

They barely budge by depressing by hand; there has to be a better way to check their tension?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

No, my originals came out of the housings fine, but I need to evaluate them.

evaluate tensioners

Mine are out too; I'd like to stick w/ orignial mech, type; maybe add hydra-stops for some security.

I have an extra used set which I placed into a vise with gradual pressure. They seem to depress more by hand now and appear to have good pressure. Still not sure how much tension is reasonable however.

Judging by the screw on the side, I am assuming that they require some motor oil to be added as well to lubricate them.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks!

I just opened the covers this weekend. Buy the stops, as I found I have a collapsed tensioner and that little disc saved my backside. They do work.
