Original or 930S Wheel? Advice??

I had a AJ USA 930S wheel (with crest) on my '78 SC, and regretfully let it go with the car when I sold it. I really liked the wheel, so now that I have my '85 Targa, I figured I'd buy one. In the interim, I came across the wheel I always wanted, a Porsche OEM 930S style wheel with embossed crest. When I saw this wheel, I jumped at the chance to buy it. I mean, what could be better than a Porsche OEM wheel!

Well, today I skipped, smiling, out into the garage with my new wheel, sat down in the pilots seat, held up the wheel, and.................Well, I'm not sure if I like it.

To clarify, I love the wheel itself.....Incredible build quality, Porsche OEM, embossed crest, factory look and feel; what else could you ask for? But I'm not sure if I like the look of the wheel in my car.....I don't know if it's the shade of black on the new wheel, the straight lines of the old wheel, the P-O-R-S-C-H-E embossed on the rectangular horn pad, of if I'm just plain whacko (don't answer that one )....

What do you guys think????

It is weird that the factory wheel in black is really not black but a mid-to-dark grey. The repro wheel is now almost as expensive as the factory one however, so I'd stick w/ factory if I were you.

I thought the 930S wheel center portion was triangular, and had the Porsche CREST embossed on it, not the word Porsche????

I would stick with the 930s wheel, but it's your car so put what looks and feels best on it.

Sorry for the confusion, but what I'm trying to decide on is whether to go with the new 930 wheel, or keep the original wheel that came with the car from the factory.....

I'd upload some photo's, but I keep getting an error......

Are you talking about that ugly mid to late 80s 4 spoke wheel?

If so, I think you should use the 930 wheel - and sell the stock one to me!

Oh, I understand now, I just re-read your post. I still like the 930S wheel, but the Carrera wheel would be my second choice (in fact, I'm getting ready to ditch my ugly SC wheel for a Carrera wheel).

Here's the 930S reproduction wheel from Pelican's website for refrence since the upload function isn't working. The embossed crest adds so much to it I think.

Yep, that "ugly" wheel that they started using, I believe, in '85..

I agree with Speedracer - the embossed crest adds a lot to the 930 wheel. I would be tempted with that wheel, but it would have to have the embossed crest. (Not the tacked on enamel one!).

The wheel I bought looks like the Pelican wheel above, but it's the factory version with the embossed crest.......It really is a beautiful wheel.

I guess I'm not alone in noticing that it's not really black, but almost a charcoal grey color?????

I think the 930S wheel looks out of place in a mid-80's car. I'm not crazy about the Carrera 4-spoke either, but it fits the rest of the interior better than any other wheel.

Is it that the wheel looks to modern? I think it's the styling that's bugging me, but that greyish cast make it look very out of place.

Funny thing is, I thought the AJ USA wheel with the crest looked right at home in my '78 Euro SC.

Maybe I'm just losing my marbles.........

Wasn't the 930S a mid-80s wheel??

It's not just the crest though. It's also the high grade pebble grain leather. The shiney leather on the repo looks cheap to me.

The original 80's 930s factory wheel didn't look much like what gets called a 930S wheel today. It was a 3-spoke but otherwise looked pretty different.

One of the first things I vowed to change on my new to me '85 Carrera (boy, I love writing that!) was the "ugly" four spoke. I must say though, that I am getting used to the looks, and the feel is just about perfect for me. I will wait and spend the bucks on something other than an upgrade that will not make any difference in performance. In other words, the original wheel is looking better and better.

Well, if you don't like the factory 930S wheel, I'd probably buy it from you - as would several others, I expect.

Put them both on the car and sit there off & on for a few days....

To me a smaller diameter, thicker griped wheel is a driver interface performance improvement.

I agree. Upgrading from the thin-rimmed, hard SC wheel to the repro 930S one made a very noticeable improvement for me. The steering wheel is a pretty important part of the car

the repo 930S wheel is definitely second rate in the looks/quality of leather work dept compared to the oem 930S, it is however considerably less expensive - if you shop around - I pd. 245 for mine recently. IMHO this wheel is an upgrade - function-wise.I as well like the look of the wheel - which is black (not greyish in any manner) BTW the AJ USA wheel is now available embossed
