Alternator light on dim gremlin

I have a '79 930 experiencing alt light gremlins. The light is on dim and gets a little brighter with revs. This gremlin also effects my stereo when revs are above 1500 by cutting out sound. Battery measurements while running are 15.5 -16vts. I had the alt and voltage regulator replaced about 6 months ago. I have checked visually most all wiring from front to back with no success. Any suggestions!!

It sounds like your alternator is bad. It should not be charging at 16 volts. Ideally you should see about 13.5 to 14 at 1500 - 2000 RPM. Is the alternator still under warranty?

Bad voltage regulator. If the alternator is charging at 15V it clearly is doing it's job, but too well.

When the regulator fails, the charging current fed to the rotor is too high, which results in too high a voltage induced in the stator.

You don't say what brand of alt or VR you have. You should always use the same manufacturer for both, as some alts like a slightly higher or lower charging current. Or you could get an adjustable voltage regulator and lower the "setpoint" to bring the charging voltage back down to 14.4.

Funny your radio is cutting out, a clear sign of overvoltage. I bet your tach needle bounces around too, right?
