Smile Day 1 vs Day 546...

Well, I am almost ready to wrap up the paint on this car. I am pretty pleased with how it has all turned out so far, exept for the occasional drip I need to work out (tips please!). Sure, some of you will see this car and say "Who za F... paints zees for zim? He zhould ve zhot at Dawn!" I don't think it's that bad, but I've seen some of the flames being applied here to a few cars that were for sale on Ebay that someone refurbished, much like me no doubt, so it will probably happen!.

However, please consider I have rendered usable a car that was passed on by one of the wrenches at the local "Guru's" shop. He said it wasn't worth restoring...it was only suitable for parts.

Here it was, the day I got it...Day 1, short hood and all...

I doubt anyone is going to flame you for saving a longhood car. Looks great!

I really admire the guys who have the guts to set up a paint booth in their garages. I hope to do it one day, but the prep just seems like sooooo much work.

Great Job! That's a great transformation and you did it yourself. Heck most of the guys on this board who are so critical of everyone else's P-Cars, have never changed their own spark plugs Your color and Guards red are my two favorite p-car colors. Keep the pictures coming as you progress.

Great job. Awesome intestinal fortitude as well. I made a paint booth out of my parents garage back in high school to paint my teachers old BMW 2002. It was a ton of work but turned out pretty good. You will be surprised what some color sanding and polish can do to a paint job.

Cheers,

Geoff

Latest Picture of completed car...

Hello!

Just wanted to share the latest picture of my resurrected Longhood.

I've been driving it about a week after getting the glass installed and tying up loose ends.

It drives REAL well, although I can tell some wheel bearing are due to be replaced, and maybe some ball joints.

How hard would it be to photoshop some Porsche or Carrera graphics on to this image?

I have gleened alot of information from this site (without even having to ask questions most of the time - most is already here!)
and sourced all of my new parts from Pelican, and fiberglass from Peter at Rennspeed. I could not be happier with the service of both of these vendors!

If you have an understanding spouse, I wholy recomend "taking the plunge" on "resurecting" one of the noble old beasts. I use "resurrect" as opposed to "restore" since I really didn't "restore" the car - my work is passable, but far from concourse, and it is not original- I don't want draw the ire of some of the purists!

I did set the car up according to what I like, and what I could afford. I am pretty surprised at how well my rookie efforts turned out. I did all the work on the car, except for the glass install.

Total budget to date, including the car, paint, used Fachs, new Dunlop 245/50/15 rear tires, seals, window trim, headliner, shifter bushings, windshield (installed)?

$5500

My goal was to do it for less than $6k.

Anyway, thanks again to this board and vendors!

Dave...I envy your hand skills! You know, when the snow isn't there? That car looks like it's begging to take a run to Ketchum, buy it's driver a beer, (in honor of Earnest H., of course) then a run back to Boise! You live in the country longnoses were built for.

PWD - Yes, that is a great drive (That's HWY 21 to Idaho City behind me and the car in the last picture I posted!). Last did that ride on my street bike in Sept. Camped out at Stanley lake. Awesome! I can't wait take the 911 on that ride. Also love to finally meet some of the folks on this board at a P-car event or road trip. Hopefully by then I can turn off the heat/oil fumes...

Funny you mention Hemingway, but he is one of my favorites.
Great memorial to him in Sun Valley. "Best of all he loved the fall..."

I love Oregon, too. Went to high school in Bend, and some college in Newberg.
