turn signal switch

while checking my 83 911SC dimmer switch I got some smoke from the turn signal housing on the steering column . I've had problems with dimming head lights in the past . My low beam light works but when I try the high beam the lights go out . Do I replace the switch or try to clean the contact points ? I'm almost sure the problem is in the switch . Please advice .

It's easy to pull off the steering well, just mark it so you put it back in the same position. Once it's off, it's not rough to get to. My problem with mine was the brights stayed on. I panicked and bought a turn signal switch off eBay, then took it apart. I just had to bend the little contact for the brights a hair. It's been quite awhile and it still works. I didn't have any smoke though. I hope you have a fire extinguisher in your car at all times, even once you fix this problem.
