CA car registered in MA

I'm in MA and have been looking to buy an SC or now more like a Carrera and while I have been searching on the East coast, I keep finding CA cars of interest on here and other sources. Usually they are in better condition and less $$.

My question is will an SC or Carrera have any smog features (and added equipment) making them less desirable on the track and for DE events than if they were never registered in CA or is it the the other way around? Does a smog car from CA run better over the long run??

Massachusetts now has the same CA smoq regulations for newer cars, as I think all states do, however does a car from the '80s make a difference?

Thanks in advance!!

I just bought an 84 Carrera from CA and I don't believe there is any difference in this car and one originally sold in another state. The only issue is that you have more flexibility in modifying older cars since emission standards are not as strict. I had a 74 / 911 had 3.0 motor and in CT it only had to meet 74 / 2.7 emission stds. I went with SSI's and B&B muff, 964 cams and it was a great setup in a 2300# car. (Like a dummy, I sold the 74) Also in CT when the car turned 25 years old it was exempt from testing. I beleive that is still the case today. I now have the 84 Carrera and I'm hoping the same will be the case in NY where this car is currently registered. Check on internet with MA DMV and see if the cars are exempt when over 25 years old

I believe some Cal cars have some sort of smog device using an extra fan belt. These were the early SCs and maybe some of the 70's 911s. If I remember right, Bruce Andersons 911 Performance Handbook talks about them and the years the smog stuff was added and deleted.

Good Luck!

Thanks guys. I have Bruce's book and will chack it out tonight. I have been very tempted with a 25yr old SC since not only are they smog exept but I can also then insure it as a sunday driver for $200 a year instead of $1000.

It sounds tough out there on the left coast with mods and such. Thankfully not as much to worry about out here.

Now I just need to close the deal on a car!!
