The seat misses the VERY last all-the-way-back "click".

Ugh - my whole car is dirty... along with the carpet, but I will get a pic, send me a PM so I will remember.

I live ~30 miles from Rod (I think that's his name) (caraudioinnovations).

I had him redo the carpeting on the box, because I got it used in black. My car's interior is Cashmere (that's how I know it's not tan, or camel).

The bass overpowers my speakers, as my speakers are not powered by an amp... yet.

It's nice and clean bass though. Makes my speakers sound like a much better system. I hope to get some new speakers and another amp this Christmas. Are you listening Santa?

That is Rod Birch's handywork. We used to call that the "Birch System" The 911 is transformed with this setup.

I am selling the complete Rod Birch system out of my car including the sub enclosure. I have the following:

Kenwood KDC9011 revolving face AM/FM/CD head unit, subwoofer package with beige sliverknit carpet and 8 inch Kicker subs, JL Audio XR component 2-way speakers in the doors, the Sony 400 watt amp, Kenwood 2-ways for the rear deck

The system rocks literally...Rod Birch flew out to the east coast for an install tour which is linked on his main page:

He did a great install on my car...anyway the system is great - I am sheding weight though and the system must go...

It is a good system - I used to have a car with one.

But for a rear engine sports car it has two problems - it is heavy - about 28 lbs. (see my wt. database on Thom's web page), and it puts that wt. near the rear of the car.

I would be inclined to build something into the smuggler's box, and/or the passenger footwell. It's your call -- how sporty do you want your sports car....

I'm about to start on a project to build a composite sub enclosure to go between the drivers and passengers feet. I'm using a 10" driver (Audiobaun) that only needs .5 cubic feet.

Lighter solution. Custom built enclosure with an 8" sub firing down. Plenty of thump for me.

Here is a custom fiberglass enclosure that i built. The back seats are still relatively usable, not that anyone can fit back there comfortably anyway. Its not very stealth, but i was able to fit a 10" sub in there and it sounds really good, not overpowering, but clean and clear. The seats do not go back all the way, but I am not very tall so it doesnt really bother me.

I have the full dual 8" enclosure like Nick...it does impede the seat from going all the way back, but I'm 5'9" and don't need the 'last click' anyway. His 'system' really transforms the car into a studio.

I think you could have it built and stuffed for that price at just about any place that is good at it. A good friend of mine makes custom enclosures fo the 04 wrx spare tire well.. just take out the spinner and it fits IN the spare.. he's been doing it for a bit but there is software to figure out the volumetric effeciency and if you need to cheat with poly fill to trick the subs into acting as if it were in a larger enclosure. Not a difficult set up.. I'll bet we can get the measurements from a nice board member and you could make your own out of MDF board... I'm curious about the measurements

7", amp built in, but the good thing is it slides UNDER the seat! Im just gonna mount it under the seat like I did on drivers side with the amp to the speakers.

- There are basicly two ways to put a speaker in a small box - one is the "classic" way (actually popularized by Henry Kloss, et al. with the famed KLH and AR speakers of the early 1960's) which is to use a sealed enclosure, an "acoustic suspension."
The second is newer and was only worked out in the 1980's by Thiel (perhaps because it required numeric methods solutions). It is called the Thiel alignment. Sometimes just called a ported speaker, but watch out becuz any POS can be ported.

Google those terms and I'm sure you'll find some handy calculators to use. Be sure the box is rigid and use the highest density mdf you can find. You'll also need a way to match the "sub"* to your other speakers.

* Most of these aren't really subs, by home hifi standards.

Also, anybody doing this needs to decide if they just want a "thumper" or if they want something close to high fidelity - i.e. do you want to reproduce music. If the later, you want a smooth frequency response (at minimum) and not the big frequency hump (the thump) that the gangstas have in their puny rice rocket.... Ok you get my drift here.


Also, no one mentined bell - search on his name for some ideas and installs. There are several threads on this.

As a member of the Church of Light Weight, I will donate a greasy spark plug to the first person who figures out how to fit a first class audiophile sound system into an early 911 without adding more than 7 lbs.

Have been doing business with Rod Birch since about 94 when he was working out of his garage in Sacramento. He helped me figure out dimensions for a sub box for my 944. I worked at a cabinet shop at the time and Ii built the box there...Still sounds great! I also have his sub enclosure in my SC. He came to house and did a custom install since it was two 10" subs (His standard is 8"). I have nothing but praise for the man, his system, knowledge and all around good guy (helpful) persona. (This was not a paid endorsement although I do have one of his tee shirts)

Here is a thread on the smuglers box subwoofer set up I did. I haven't heard to many cars sound better and it is completely stealth! MY ultimate stereo system
