Are there any down sides to wrapping the turbo?

A hotter turbo is one of them.
Since radiative heat is your biggest worry you could buy some thin sheet aluminum and place a shield somewhere between the turbo and bumper. That way the bumper is protected and the turbine housing can still shed heat too. |

Try turbo city, www.turbocity.com
they might have what you need. |
I run a fiberglass bumper also -- but do not have a heat planket on the turbo. I put one on the inside of the BUMPER. That way I know it will never be in danger from the heat. There is a large air barier between the turbo, muffler, and bumper blanket that helps as well.
