How far to push in flywheel seal?
Attempt #1 to replace the flywheel seal on my 73S (2.4L MFI) wasn't very successful - it still leaked. I didn't push it in as far as it would go, but it was in a bit further than "flush with the surrounding boss". Looking in the annulus, it appears as if it should be pressed in as far as it will go. Any advice?
I am also fabricating a section of pipe to press it in evenly, instead of beating it into place with a hammer, as I did the first time. Thanks, Brian |
That happened to me, too.
TWICE. Put new seal in, leaked. Put second new seal in, leaked! As it turned out, the new seals were no good. They were the all black type, factory seals that I got from the same supplier. I did some investigating and found that the factory updated the seal to a 2 tone black/brown one. The brown part sits on the crank, and I think the brown is Viton. I found that there is some kind of superceded part number for that part - when we ran a search for the SC seal on the computer, it came up with a "superceded" and new Carrera part number. Ordered that one from a different supplier (to try to assure it came from a different mfg batch as the first two), put it in and it was totally dry. I don't think your installation was the problem. It's actually pretty hard to install these wrong, IMO, if you are careful (things can happen, for example, you could wack it so hard that the spring comes out, hammer it in sideways and nick it, etc. but I think that is all unlikely if any reasonable care is used). So, I'd suspect the seal and would caution against getting another new one from the same supplier you got the first! Anyways, |

The old seal, after a through cleaning, can be used a cheap "special" installation tool that works btwn the hammer and the new seal
