broken axle bolt/tranny question

The plate where the axle bolts up to the tranny. If I remove the bolt in the center of it can I just slide it out without any repercussions? I have already removed the bolt and slid it out a little I didn't want to go any further without some reassurance. Please don't yell at me for going this far into the dark without a map. And what is the torque on that bolt?
Thanks

The bolt that holds on the drive flange can be removed with no problem on at least the 901 & 911 trannys. You have a 915 and it is similar.

The drive flange is the thing the inboard CV joints mount to. It is splined and is driven by the differential inside the trans.

The torque is about 20 ft-lb.s or so. But get a Tech Spec booklet for your modely year to be sure.

There are some gaskets on the flange and on the side cover, depending on how far into this you go.

still not sure what you mean - the center bolt that I described can be removed, no problem. If part of it is broken off then you have a more involved problem.

Oh... sorry. One of the 6 axle bolts sheered off when I lost my axle a little while back. I pulled the axle down to clean out the old grease, re-grease and replace the bolts properly. so... I have to drill a hole through what is left of the bolt and use an extractor. I just wanted to be able to do it at the bench instead of under the car. It's a tight area to work in.
The tranny is in good shape. no problems.
Thank you Randy

Mike,

I suspect you will lose a quart or so of the gear oil when you remove the output flange ...

The center bolt that holds on the output flange is a 'stretch' bolt and should not be reused! The exact OEM bolt needs to be used, so don't be too surprised ...

No oil loss. I have the rear jacked up pretty high. The shop manual has it listed as an expansion bolt. Is that the same as a strech bolt? Is that why there is more than one torque value listed in the book?
the head of the bolt has a M GRF 8.8
I have 2 threads going on now take a look at this one
Axle flange bolt torque for an SC
