cam cost comparison

I searched the board and could not come up with this answer. Has anyone completed/discussed a cost comparison for different SC cam options. Which is the best value, a 964 cam machined to fit the head or an Elgin reground SC cam to a 964 profile? The used 964 cams seem to cost between $300-400. My 1980 engine is out for a complete rebuild and now is the time to make the move. Any advice?
Thanks,
Jim S.

The answer is simple, call me!

Grinding the 964 profile on the SC cam cores is straight forward.
If you buy a used set of 964 cams, machine off the power steering drive, you will still have a used set of cams.

Are you replacing the pistons? If you bump the compression ratio to 9.3-1 the 964 cams work well. If you stick to 8.5-1, the sport SC cam might be a better choice.

I am assuming that my 1980 is at 9.3:1 ratio already. In Peter Morgan's book, "The Original Porsche 911" he says that the US 1980 SC was the first year to benifit from the increase in compression over the ROW 8.6:1. Am I laboring under a false assumtion?
I will call!
Thanks,
Jim S.

I think you are right.
It should also be listed in Wayne's book. My Dempsey book and all my little spec books are still packed in a box, since I moved in the past few weeks.

A couple of other questions:
I plan on making the MegaSquirt EFI conversion, will the 964 cam be a good choice with the 9.3:1 pistons?
Does Elgin have 964 reground cams available for sale with a core charge for return with my stock cams (in good shape).
Thanks,
Jim S.

Hi Jim,
I am no longer at Elgins. I now have my own business.
I sometimes have the 964 cams on the shelf. The only set I have
in stock right now I have for sale on Ebay.
I can grind your cams in a few days.
With the EFI conversion the 964 grind will work very good.
