Engine fan & electrical

I am about ready to paint the fan and fan shround. I have decided to go with a red and silver color scheme. Today my dad and I pulled off the fan. We found out that the fan shround was cracked. I have read the tech articles, which say that the shround is made of fiberglass, so tomorrow we are going to Kragen to get a fiberglassing kit. We would like to know, what type of metal is the fan made of?

On the other hand, we have an electrical problem somewhere. The battery in the car is dead after one week of non use. We are thinking it is the voltmeter that is draining the battery. What would cause the battery to discharge even after the car has been runing for about 1 hour?

Thanks,
Matt

The fan and fan housing are made of magnesium. Be careful when handling.....don't drop them they dent real easy.

If you decide to polish them, I feel they should be clearcoated as they will tarnish rather quickly.

Sounds like a bad battery, I had the same exact problem.

Mike, Thanks for the info. Where can I get an inexpensive battery tester?

How can I repair the cracked fan shround if it is made of magnesium?

Matt

Magnesium can be welded. Instead of getting an inexpensive battery tester spend $30-$50 and buy a decent multi-meter. Then check your battery and voltage. At rest you should be reading at least 12.5 volts. With the engine at 2000 rpm you should be reading at least 14 volts.

I just got out of the garage for tonight, and heres what I've accomplished so far: removal of fan, shround, alternator, and sandblasting of fan and shround. I also noticed that in the engine compartment on the left there are 3 fuses, and the top one is blown. I have taken the bad one out, which is a 25 amp fuse. What are the red wires connecting to the fuses used for?

There is also a crack in one of the fan blades. Would it be safe to put liquid metal glue on it? We do not have access to a welder.

Thanks,
Matt
