How to test if a Heat Exchanger is leaking?

Is there a way to check for a HE leak?

You can generally smell the exhaust in the cabin when you have the heat on. Or you can get a CO detector if you want to get more scientific.

Go for a long drive with the windows rolled up and the heat on, and see if you fall asleep?

Get a CO monitor? (probably safer than the above test)
