(Fairly) new to the board

Hi,

Been scrolling through the forums for some time now, so about time I posted pics of my 911. It's a weird mixture of different models, but a good playground to learn how things work.

Since theoretically we have snow here in Finland during winter, the car is now in the garage for some major work to be done. (New interior carpets, door pads, targa top conditioning, engine conditioning etc.) Hopefully ready by springtime!

Regarding this forum; the search -button has been extremely useful and no question of mine has been unanswered in an earlier post. Extremely good source of information this site!

Welcome, Salonen.

Many of us are in withdrawal too, as our cars sleep. Tell us more about your ride . . .

Well,

By registration the car is 911 from 1972. VIN indicates it's originally 911 T Targa. It was originally sold in Germany, and imported to Finland around 2000-2001. I picked it up from a dealer who had had it staying outdoors for over a year (just had to rescue her from that...). Severe rust problems all around, 1.5 sq. meter of of new sheet metal welded in, so now it's a bit better. Main areas of problem were under the seats on the floor as the targa top has been leaking.

Despite it's originally 1972, there really nothing much left from that year; the engine has been swapped to a 1973 E spec engine, transmission is 911/45 form 1976, but with 5 gears (should be 4 gears?). The bodywork seems to be mostly from an SC, as well as sport seats, power windows and mirrors. H4 headlights upgraded, Carrera chain tensioners upgraded, Turbo valve covers upgraded.

Quite a long way from the original.

Hey Salonen,
Welcome to the board. I notice that you have a chin spoiler, but no rear wing... I think for proper aerodynamics at high speed you might want to consider either adding a rear wing, or removing the front spoiler... It's probably only an issue over 150 km/hr.

Definitely worth a thought, thanks for the tip! Though the Finnish race tracks are rather slow, might take the autobahn one day and don't want to end up off-roading.

About the chin spoiler...

I'm certainly no expert here, but I do know something about aerodynamics. One of the main reasons why this car gets light at high speed is because it's shaped somewhat like an airfoil - flat on the bottom and curved upward over the top. This basic shape is what just about all wings have and it causes the car to begin to behave like, well, an airplane. That little nondescript rubber chin spoiler goes a long way toward helping to suppress this lifting tendency by deflecting a lot of the air that would otherwise get underneath the car out to the side instead. The rear wing, of course, contributes a fairly high amount of downward force at very high speed and goes a long way toward neutralizing the rear end's massive amount of lift.

As I understand it, you never want to have a rear wing installed without having a front spoiler installed due to the resulting massive imbalance in aerodynamic lift that would create - big push down on the tail with no push in the front. However, I don't believe that having a front spoiler installed on the car without a rear wing is a bad thing. The front spoiler doesn't push the car down, per se, but rather prevents much of the air from getting underneath the car. This should have the effect of reducing the car's overall lift substantially, not just in the front.

450knotOffice: Dito on the front spoiler without rear spoiler. Salonen: A '76 transmission should be a 915 with 5-speed, I think. Check and see if you have LSD installed by PO. Lift the car with both rear wheels off the ground, now rotate the wheels. If they both rotate in the same direction, you have Limitted Slip Differential. Are those Fuchs wheels 7's in front and 8's in the rear?

Salonen: Great looking Targa. I can see many body updates as well as the running gear. If I'm not mistaken, you have very strict speed laws in your country (high fines)? Do you get a chance to "let 'er run" sometimes? Tell us about your roads, etc....Thax....Bob S.

Aerodynamics as I understand it:

No spoiler, OK

Front spoiler no rear spoiler, great. Keeps car on the road, reduces lift at speeds

Front and Rear spoiler, good. Helps keep car on the road at speeds.

Rear spoiler no front spoiler, really bad. Causes front end to lift, loss of control of your vehicle.

Oh, Nice Colour!!!

Nice looking otherwise.

Gunter: Yes, it is 5 speed, but all literature around the subject indicate it's orignally 4-speed? And yes, 7's and 8's. Well sighted.

The speed limits are definitely strict; fines start counting from hign from really low excesses of speed limits. And the highest limits are 120 km/h on highways. The good thing is that there are a lot of winding back roads all across the country that make excellent drives even without extremely high speeds. Unfortunately most of the very best roads (read: Neste Rally Finland SS's) are gravel... What comes to race tracks there are 5 international level tracks around Finland, not Formula 1 level, but anyways. They are quite nice, slow, but nice rides anyway. Wish it was spring again...
