Smile 74 911S Restoration

She is finally going back together guys. Thanks to many of you for the great info and input.

I finished the motor and tranny then turned the garage into a paint shop. Disassembled, sanded, primed and painted her the original 408 code for 74 with base and clear. It turned out great and if she color sands like I hope, she will be a gem.

She is pretty much reassembled now and the headliner is next (yuck). Not looking forward to that one as it is a sunroof coup. Oh well, I've done okay to this point, no time to get squeemish now.

Couple more weeks of work and she will be on the road. Progress pics will follow as I go.

Thanks again for the help............

The engine mostly ready to go.

My homemade spray booth.

All the parts painted.

Ready to go back together.

Thanks Jason,

I am embarking on the headliner project next week. I bought Wayne's "101 Projects for your 911" book but the headline project section didn't instill a lot of confidence in me. Any pointers you might add?

As for the rest of the interior, I took it all to a local shop in pieces and had it all re-done. The new carpets are waiting in a box. The only thing I haven't gotten yet and thought I might have to fabricate myself are new luggage straps.

The paint code on the car is 408 which my book calls Bittersweet Brown for 1974.

Kurt,

I had a local shop here called Prescott Upholstery do the work. Excellend quality and very reasonable. Small one man shop that takes great pride in what they do. As a side note though... He didn't want to touch my headliner replacement. He's no dummy

Yes Craig the venting worked great. I installed two 25" filters (like you put in your HVAC return ducts at home) in the plastic (using duct tape) high on one end and another low on the other end of the booth. I then put a 24" box fan outside the booth right in front of the low filter and ran it on high while I sprayed. The PVC framing was completly cover with 6 mil plastic and I installed a 7' long tape-on zipper (purchased from Home Depot) so I could get in and out. It all worked perfect, no overspray on anything!

Jim what kind of paint did you use? Single or two stage?

Kurt,

I used a two stage base coat - clear coat made by Sinclair. Got it from a local auto paint supply shop. The interesting thing was that sinclair only had the 408 formula in a single stage. When I told them I wanted a two stage they gave my supplier instructions on a special way to order it in the two stage paint. For us DIY the two stage is a safer way to go.(more margine for error)

Paint code '408' is called 'Cockney Brown' or ''Chocolate Brown' in the factory service manual ... depending on the year.

I think you helped me ID that color name awhile back Warren. The problem was that none of the auto paint suppliers I contacted could find it by the "Cockney Brown" name. They all had the formula for the 408 code for 1974 but they called it "Chocolate Brown" or more often, "Bittersweet Brown". I ordered the 408 paint locally from the Sinclare Supplier and then had it eye matched to the original color under the hood. It turned out pretty exact. If the book calls it "Chocolate" then I shall too.
