Speedo works but not odo
 

On a run back from south Texas (gotta love Texas highways. no one in sight. 80 degrees and the top off. 150 miles in under an hour and 45 minutes including stopping at the border patrol and slowing down through two small towns) the odometer stopped working when I reset it. Speedmeter works fine but nada on the odometer. What's the deal? Anyone else have this happen and how much to get it fixed.

Very common. Do a search and you will find a ton of stuff.
Some people send to a speedo shop. Some people try to fix it the diy method.

Ahh many 911 pilots have gone before you on this common malady. Now would be a good time to acquaint yourself with the search function of this board. It can fixed by yourself (there are instructions here how) or send it off to a qualified speedo shop, of which there are several available, including our host I think. HTH

Mine did the same thing and North Hollywood Speedometers rebuilt it. It works great now!

Welcome to the fun. I have had the same problem but I figured my 911 is staying with me until the end of time if I can help it so the odometer gear doesn't mean tht much to me and worst case I get to make a track car if someone wants to make a big deal about a car with over 180k on the clock.

Come on guys! This is a Pelican web site & not NoHo Speedo's web site.
Send the speedo to Pelican for repair. They have many sources for parts,
new & rebuilt, and are priced competitively.

I agree with Loren on this - if you don't want to DIY, use Pelican's service.

However, if you want to try the DIY route, I'll be posting my detailed writeup with pic's from each step tomorrow (I wrote it at work and don't have it with me). I found the technical article helpful, but incomplete and it was written for a mechanical speedometer and most of ours are electric.

I found enough further information in the archives to do the job, but it was very piecemeal.

It is NOT a simple repair, but given adequate time and patience, it is not rocket science. I'm a very amateur mechanic in my spare time, so you CAN do it if you have the patience.

You can start by ordering the gear from www.odometergears.com (mine cost $29 with shipping) or from the rennlist guy who sells for a few dollars more.

Thanks all. I may try this repair myself since it sounds like something I can do although may not want to have started half way through it. AND as for the search function I do use it. The pictures someone posted of the repair were great. But for some reason I thought the odometer going out was odd and I was one of the few "lucky" ones to have experienced it. If I change my mind about DIY I'll send to PP to fix.

If you tried to reset the odometer while the car was in motion, chances are you destroyed the little plastic gear...it's a common problem. Or, the gear simply disintegrated over time. Either way, apparently it's not a tough DIY job, and there are write-ups to guide you thru the process. www.odometergears.com can sell you the parts you need if our host doesn't carry them.
