Show your.....Helmets!!!

Well, I bought my last Bell back in 1985....I think that rating has expired........:D

Looking around...what do you put on your head????

juanbenae 12-16-2004 11:53 AM

I like my Bell. It is very comfortable. Snell 95, I think.

Just a thought in full-face vs. open. There is a warning out in the latest Sports Car mag. (from the SCCA) about the danger of wearing a full-face helmet when an air bag detonates. Broken jaws are possible.

Mine being used:

Bell helmets, and Hinchman drivers suits are the only way to go.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1103236520.jpg

Hey nice suit! Im sold on Stand 21. Have you ever felt how light their helmets are?. Suits breathe better than any other.
Maybe a stand 21 helmet when mine expires. I dont even no when mine ( helmet) expires............

mede8er 12-16-2004 04:14 PM

I'm leaning towards Stand 21 also....

I brought this up because I saw in another form that SA 95 will expire in about a year and a half for PCA and SA 2000 takes over.....

Fritz 12-16-2004 06:19 PM

When I took the car in to get painted I took the helmet along too...

Simpson!!!!

Can you post that article? I can't image how you can get a broken jaw from a full-face helmet / airbag incident.

Having been an M/C rider for 18 years, and also having investigated many, many accidents involving M/C's I can't imagine a full face helmet being able to break a jaw from an airbag impact. I've seen riders after direct faceplants with both vehicles and pavements and never have I seen a full face cause this type of injury. Could certainly see it happening with an openface, or worse.

That's just my opinion of course. If there's been a study, as a full face wearer myself, I'd be quite interested in seeing it.

Now I could see an improperly fitted helmet moving on impact, thus causing unnecessary injury, and this may be part of the basis for the claims, but a properly fitted and adjusted full face should and would provide more protection.

Chris are you telling us you are a cuckold?:D

}{arlequin 12-17-2004 07:18 AM

have any of you attempted painting their own? what kind of surface prep work (other than taking off all the hardware) is necessary?

Weaver 12-17-2004 07:33 AM

Here is my SA90 Bell M3EC. Painted by Corby Concepts here in Indy. As you see, I didn't have my shifter out at all this summer, the visor is very dusty.

Not to be anal but, shouldn't this thread be in the autoracing forum? And don't even get me started on the use of an open face helmet!

Take care

Quicksilver 12-17-2004 10:29 AM

I had my helmet painted to match the car and here is a picture of the final and most important modification to the helmet. . .

Here's mine. And for the record, I DO drive around with the Speed Racer soundtrack playing...at least in my head. :D

http://fasterfasterfaster.com/RacerX.jpg

1 Snell 95 Helmet $100
1 Roll of White Tape $ 2
5 weekends of AutoX $125

Driving fast and pretending you're Racer X? FREAKING PRICELESS

mackpipes 12-17-2004 02:44 PM

Harlequin, I painted mine with some rattle cans from a hobby store. You don't have to remove the hardwear, just tape over it, or paint over it. I did prep it with cleaner, and them wet sanded it before a clearcoat. All told it cost about $40. The logos came from an RC car sticker kit.

Not a pro job, but then I don't worry about dinging up a $500 paint job at the track.:D

Great job painting the helmet Ted, it looks awesome!!!

We have a winner.
Thanks Mark

I appreciate your support. Actually, being in this place makes me miss everything we take for granted at home...family, good food, roads, people who speak English, roads, being clean, roads, a cool or warm place to sleep, roads....5 months to go before I can smell the oil burning, hear the orchastra of exhaust, feel the vibration through the shift and stare at her curves....just 5 more months....!

We received an airplane load of Christmas presents from the States yesterday and had a nice party before we leave for another mission. I was astounded that someone (don't know who) sent a pack of the most recent Excellence Magazines. God must be truly be watching over me!

To all: We appreciate your support. Without you guys keeping the faith back home, we would lose it here. Remember why we are here, remember those in New York that won't have families to celebrate Christmas with this year. Unlike this place, you can go to the movie, the grocery, to school and any where you like without fear. By taking the fight over here, they are unable to take it to our country. Besides the obvious, I can't think of another place I would rather be for Christmas. Soldiers have been my part time family for 19 years. As we celebrated Thanksgiving in our own way, so will we Christmas. Thanks to you guys, the USO, and our families back home, Christmas won't be just another day here, it will be special, one we will always remember, one we hope to never experience again, but proud we did.

Install425 12-19-2004 05:34 AM

You Da man Mark! Thanks

Jgordon 12-19-2004 09:52 AM

Amen. we're proud of you guys over here.
