Finally saw the 997

No real surprises in this post, but I was at the local dealer the other day, and took a good look inside and out at the 997 (non-S).

-The doors shut with a hollow, tinny sound. A Nissan sound.

-Nice interior that at least reminds me of the traditional 911 layout, unlike the 996 interior.

-Very short gear throws, much improved

-The front looks really good, the back is still a 996. It needs a red trim strip between the tail lights

-Switchgear feel is not as solid as the older cars, but not bad at all

I didn't drive it because I had to get back to work, but I could see picking one up in 10 years or so. If I had the $70K to spend on a car right now, I'd buy a 993 and pay down my house.

Finally, it was interesting that the three sales people in the showroom all came outside to look at the '95 993 I arrived in. The dealer mechanics may not want to see them any more, but the sales guys seem to like them all right.

I'm actually a little upset that I like the 997 so much. It's the first new car I've wanted in a long time, and given the fact I can't afford (or want to afford) new cars, it's kinda annoying.

Ditto. Too bad its not in the budget. It appeals to me as a mix of some of the best qualities of the 996 and 993. I got a spin in one that belongs to a family friend; I shouldn't have gone along...

I was out looking for a 930 with my dad the other day and checked out the 997 while we were in there. The salesman we had been talking to said "Yeah, at least it is free to sit in, right!" I snapped a couple pics while I was in there.

Two words: trade in.

I thought of trading the 993 in once when the salesmen were more interested in my car than the new 996's, but then I thought: why would I want to pay more money for a car that generates less excitement?
