New car...some questions

Well...I got an 83 SC targa yesterday...The car is very nice with 69000 miles. The targa leaks of coarse and the wind noise is loud.

One thing I cant figure out though...

How do I get Heat? It comes out of the little side vents, but cant seem to figure out how to get it elsewhere like the floor.

In the pic, the car had BBS rims..but I put fuchs back on when I got home.

Thanks for any insight in the heat thing...

Also..teh shifter springs back from one side, but not the other..Linkage or just a spring?

Pull up the handles next to the handbrake, that turns on the heat.
In the dashboard, there are 3 sliders, 2 black 1 red. Slide the middle one toward the arrow (triangle) points down toward the floor (not up toward the windshield).

Nice looking car. Congrats.

I just can't imagine having problems with the heater controls. They are so simple. NOT.

It is one of those things that you just chalk up to German engineering. :D

Pick up an owner manual if you didn't get one. It will tell you a lot of stuff you'll need to know.

Looks like it might have sport seats from the headrests.

Better pic's please, We want to see that thing :)

Moe pics...And yes...sport seats! No dash Cracks!!

I think it look great with the fuchs on it vs. the BBS. Looks like it is nicely optioned with the sport seats and such. Does it have any other mods?

Hi,

Welcome.....great ride!!

I'm pretty sure I have both top handles all the way to the left, and the bottom one right in the middle (half on the floor and half on the windshield). Evens out the heat distribution. Once you pull the handles by the brake, you can adjust the level by pulling higher or pushing in. Right handle is passenger side, left is yours. Also, I have a dial in b/w the seats too that adjusts the level the fan will blow, not sure if your year has that there though. Can you believe that heat will NOT come out of the center vents, seems kind of crude and old. The center vents are for the AC only.

Have fun and regards,

Good stuff! Get an Owners Manual, 101 Projects, and a Bentley Repair Manual.

Hugh R 12-19-2004 05:09 PM

You can get a nice reproduction owner's manual from Pelican.

mambodave 12-19-2004 05:20 PM

Found an owners manual in a bag of stuff from teh PO...where do I get 101 projects?

geof33 12-19-2004 05:43 PM

Great looking car... WELCOME:D

Don't buy Wayne's book (it's evil..;) )without putting some $$$ in the bank. It makes one feel like a kid with a new toy with things that just MUST be done... Have fun...

sagacis 12-19-2004 05:53 PM

Congrats on the beautiful car!

You can get 101 Projects right here. The sponsor of the board, Wayne, is the author.

You also asked about the shifter. I noticed the first thing when I first drove mine (just this last summer). The shifter only spring-centers from fifth/reverse, not from first/second. You can get an aftermarket kit to add spring centering from the left.

Finally, you can fix your surely broken odometer by CAREFULLY replacing the inner drive gear with one purchased from www.odometergears.com.

Have a blast!

Great ride! My '83 SC Targa had 138,000 miles on it -- it looks like your PO took better care of your car than mine did.

Targa's are noisy -- I've had the top rebuilt and all seals replaced. That cut the noise down quite a bit, but I still have a noisy spot at the top of the windshield. Tolerable, but not silent. Do a search here on the board and you'll find a number of people who've had some luck cutting down Targa wind noise.

Replacing the seals completely solved the water leak problems.

Enjoy -- there's nothing like the SC: handling, sound, feel!

Cheers!

C.

mambodave 12-19-2004 07:14 PM

I think the seals will realy help. But the windows dont line up right with the top. I think I need to adust the height like I read about...

And nope...The Odometer isnt broken!

Dave, thanks for taking down your avitar. That shows some class. And your car is pure class. Good find.

If you jack your car up safely, after you get the 101 Projects book which tells you how to safely place the car on stands, spend some time underneath just examining things. For instance, the heater box controls that are operated by the handles between the seats. You will see some interesting things and maybe discover some items that need attention.

The bottoms of 911s are almost as interesting as the top. It must be so, or so many of us wouldn't be down there all the time. ;)

Congrats on your purchase.

Dave--

Welcome to the wonderful world of targa ownership!

Regarding the "leaks" and the "wind noise" you mentioned, I was looking at the pics you posted and noticed a couple of things that don't look right and might be contributing to both of the problems you're experiencing. (I have a hunch that you're already aware of these things but I'm going to post them just in case you're not)

The front bead of your targa top (driver's side) isn't seated well. Perhaps the top/bead is worn or perhaps you have a problem with the targa top seal that sits between the windshield and the top.

Another thing that you might want to look at is the height of your driver's side window which appears to be close to 3/4" above normal. That might be causing all kinds of problems for you, including water and air infiltration. When I first installed power windows in my '77 the window was stopping much to high in the up position, and that was making it very difficult for me to close the door.

Congrats on the purchase, and Aloha!
Carlton

hkspwrsche 12-20-2004 07:20 AM

The window is definitely higher than needed..if you look you might actually see daylight with it rolled up past the normal stop position...probably holding the top up...that might fix a lot of the noise.
